Job Marketing: an Evaluation of Managerial Recruitment Advertising Practice

Tom Redman, Principal Lecturer in Human Resource Management, and Brian Mathews, Senior Lecturer in Marketing, Teesside Business School, draw on an analysis of job advertisements from Personnel Management to examine the extent to which the widely available normative guidelines concerning advertising content are followed. Advertising practices are further examined with respect to level of seniority of post and their origins in the public or private sector. the analysis indicates that conventional wisdom and stated job-seeker requirements are followed for several of the accepted norms. There are, however, many areas in which the discrepancies observed could materially affect the effectiveness of particular advertisements.     

The effect of discrimination and segregation on black male migration

This article develops and tests a model of black male migration to major standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSAs). Migration is examined using a dual labor market approach. A statistical model is tested that incorporates measures of discrimination and segregation. The results are consistent with the argument that discriminatory employment practices constrain black male migration and suggest that past practices help explain the labor market problems of young blacks today. The analysis is temporal, but provides insights into previously unstudied determinants of black male migration. Decennial census data is used for fifty SMSAs.     

Due diligence during the integration of physician groups

While contemplating physician group integration, providers should perform due diligence and ask questions in several key areas to ensure successful integrations: Financial--Is the group producing the revenue expected, and is the revenue cycle managed effectively? Statistical--What are the numbers of encounters, procedures, surgeries, and ancillaries? Compliance--Has the group developed and operated a sound compliance program, and has compliance been a priority? Succession--How many physicians are within three to five years of retirement?     

Interactive Technologies and Retailing Strategy: A Review,Conceptual Framework and Future Research Directions

During the past decade, a number of interactive technologies, including the Internet, have fundamentally transformed how retailers compete in the marketplace. In a similar vein, emerging interactive technologies can be expected to significantly alter the retailing landscape through their impact on retailing strategy and operations. Furthermore, it is conceivable that certain emerging interactive technologies will be perceived by some retailers as enablers (tools to more effectively compete in the marketplace) and by other retailers as disruptors of the present ways of doing business. Interactive technologies can either be generic, a technology that is readily available from an information technology (IT) vendor and is widely adopted by retailers, or proprietary. An interactive technology that is proprietary can enable a firm to generate economic rents from the innovation for an extended duration of time. Investing in a generic interactive technology, however, may be perceived as a cost of doing business for a retailer, and not a potential source of sustainable competitive advantage. However, a retailer's complementary resource endowments may enable the retailer to more effectively leverage a generic technology relative to its competitors and thereby achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. In this paper, we review the related literature, develop a process model delineating the mechanisms by which an interactive technology can affect and necessitate changes in retailers' strategies and identify directions for future research.     

Strategic partnering in Eastern Europe

There are alternatives to the much-touted “joint venture” in Eastern Europe. Some of these, such as licensing and cooperation agreements, have actually been available for some time. Others, like wholly owned subsidiaries, mergers, and acquisitions, are in the early stages of development. Clearly, the pace of reform indicates it is time to rethink the conventional wisdom on corporate development in Eastern Europe.
