A sample of adolescent heights and weights from the Czechoslovak city of Liberec is analyzed to shed light on the changes in biological standard of living between 1946 and 1966, the early years of Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. The long-term trend in average height was upwards for all social groups but differences in stature between social groups were about as large as in Communist Czechoslovakia as in market economies, such as the UK. Sons of blue-collar fathers and of parents employed in agriculture were generally shorter than sons of clerks and professional employees (teachers, doctors, lawyers). The anthropometric record also suggests that in the immediately post-war years inequality was greater than in the late 1950s and early 1960s. 相似文献

Recent developments in environmental and animal welfare issues, and the introduction of new production practices may have affected consumer attitudes and preferences toward differentiated product choice. Factors such as animal well-being, environmentally friendly production, and the use of antibiotics appear to be increasingly core consumer concerns. We link the aforementioned with Maslow's hierarchy of needs suggesting that the higher income consumers should be more altruistic in their consumptive behavior and test this by evaluating consumer preferences for these attributes in pork chops. We also test whether social consciousness of the consumers translates into choice behavior. Data was obtained by choice experiment surveys and mixed logit estimation was used to estimate consumers' willingness-to-pay for the credence attributes. Results reveal that both, higher income and socially aware consumers are on average willing to pay higher premiums for the antibiotic-free attribute, but not for other two social attributes. Also, the group of higher income consumers is highly heterogeneous in their preferences, whereas socially aware consumers tend to be more homogeneous in their preferences. 相似文献

This paper examines the effect of culture on national innovation and prosperity. Because culture shapes the way people think
about and behave in regard to risk, opportunities, and rewards, it should influence the nature of entrepreneurial activity
and, by extension, economic outcomes. Using structural equation modeling on a sample of 63 countries, we propose and test
a comprehensive explanation of how culture as an umbrella construct (as opposed to an analysis of its constituent parts) affects
innovation and national prosperity. We propose a two-stage model of innovation, and find support for our hypothesized relationship
that “economic creativity” influences “innovation implementation.” At the national level, we find that culture does indeed
influence economic creativity. We also find that innovation implementation explained some of the variation in prosperity across
countries. By establishing that “big picture” culture matters to innovation, the door has opened for researchers to evaluate
this relationship using data from any one of a number of rival culture frameworks. Moreover, these empirical finding buttress

This exploratory study examines the early impact of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive 2005/29/EC on enforcers in Scotland within the context of current policy developments regarding the use of civil and criminal enforcement
mechanisms within the UK. The Directive has been implemented in the UK by means of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 SI 1277 and the duty to enforce the Regulations falls primarily to local authority trading standards services. Twenty-one in-depth
interviews were conducted with a range of officers employed within the trading standards service based in eight local authorities
in Scotland on their perceptions of the new Regulations. The main findings were that officers’ views of the new Regulations
and the civil and criminal enforcement routes available to them was affected by structural, operational, and cultural issues
which varied from one authority to another. A number of officers were finding the Regulations a challenge to old ways and
there was evidence that many felt unprepared for the Regulations. A number of positive views were expressed regarding the
flexibility of the new Regulations and the advantages of the provisions relating to misleading omissions. Overall officers’
experiences of the Regulations were heavily influenced by the complaints received by their particular local authority service. 相似文献

Despite the importance of supply chains within today's economy, we know little about how the knowledge of supply chains can contribute to superior performance at the firm level. Building on the resource-based view, knowledge-based view and strategic choice theory, we develop hypotheses linking two knowledge-driven supply chain phenomena (i.e., knowledge development capacity and intellectual capital), innovation–cost strategy, and action to firm-level performance. Using survey and archival data from 489 firms, we found that performance is influenced by how well knowledge development capacity and intellectual capital efforts complement alternative chain strategies. More specifically, each strategy type requires different constellations of knowledge development capacity and intellectual capital to enhance action and create superior firm performance. These results highlight the importance of supply chain phenomena for firm-level performance, and more broadly, the value of supply chains as a competitive weapon in contemporary firms. 相似文献

Geopolitics has a tradition of adopting a downward looking view-from-above, which is imbued with an imperialistic ‘god's eye’ perspective. Although acknowledged and critiqued, this paper argues that it needs to be actively re-orientated to encompass the discourses and practices of looking up. The paper analyses the practices of looking up and surveilling the sky through which air defence is achieved. It interrogates the ways in which UK air defence is represented in official documents and analyses the activities of the Royal Air Force's Air Surveillance and Control System. The paper argues that this system enacts a vertical geopolitics that goes beyond those understood in other geopolitical literatures and offers suggestions for developing our understandings of a volumetric vertical geopolitics that recognises the aerial view as generated from below as well as from above. 相似文献
