Services Grids in Industry – On-Demand Provisioning and Allocation of Grid-Based Business Services

Over the last few years Grid computing has attracted considerable attention from the industry, because it offers opportunities for new on-demand business services for enterprises. In this article, we depict the current trend of enterprises to source Grid services offered by third-party utility providers on a use-on-demand, pay-per-use basis, thus leading to faster IT response to changing business needs. We outline the emerging expansion of Grid computing in industry and discuss the significant challenges still needing to be solved to further promote the adoption of Grid technology in the business domain. March 25, 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the signing of which is considered to be the birth of the European Union. Credit derivatives and loan pricing

This paper examines the relation between the new markets for credit default swaps (CDS) and banks’ pricing of syndicated loans to US corporates. We find that changes in CDS spreads have a significantly positive coefficient and explain about 25% of subsequent monthly changes in aggregate loan spreads during 2000–2005. Moreover, when compared to traditional explanatory factors, they turn out to be the dominant determinant of loan spreads. In particular, they explain loan rates much better than same rated bonds. This suggests that CDS prices contain, beyond general credit risk, to a substantial extent information relevant for bank lending. We also find that, over time, new information from CDS markets is faster incorporated into loans, but information from other markets is not. Overall, our results indicate that the markets for CDS have gained an important role for banks.     

Quality Consciousness in Japanese and U.S. electronics manufacturers: an examination of the impact of quality strategy and management control systems on perceptions of the importance of quality to expected management rewards

This study examines the implementation of quality strategies through management control and reward systems in Japan and the U.S. It focuses on electronics manufacturing, an industry in which the Japanese have successfully gained global competitive dominance. The study applies causal modelling methodology and incorporates the effects of company size and management level on quality strategies and the related management control systems for quality. In turn, the impact of these quality strategies and control systems on managers' perceptions of the importance of quality to promotion is explored. Data were gathered from 698 Japanese manufacturing managers in 50 Japanese electronics firms and 789 manufacturing managers in 64 U.S. electronics firms. The results evidence a consistency between quality strategy, management controls and reward systems, especially in the U.S., that support the normative model for strategic control systems.
