This paper builds on previous work on resident participation and the mediation of housing policy at the residential level. The paper reviews different types of residential mediation arrangement, that is, types of arrangement whereby residents become more at home in their living environments, associated with an increase in social control over those environments. After examining evidence from a number of countries, in particular the UK and Sweden, the authors conclude that five types can be distinguished: marketized arrangements, personalized arrangements, partnerships, and forms of representative and cooperative resident management. These arrangements differ from one another with regard to their empowerment effects, the bias in the vertical direction of power flow within them, their effects on residents’ independence, the range over which their effects are mediated, the inclusionary or exclusionary bias of their organizational structures, and the homogeneity or heterogeneity of their social contexts. The authors attempt to make sense of this complexity of variation by viewing the arrangements against the background of formal and informal social relations in the local areas where the arrangements are formed. It is argued that the literature on community and area regeneration can be used to throw some light on the causal mechanisms involved. Finally, the authors suggest that the whole constitution of community and of residential mediation arrangements can be understood in terms of the development of phenomenological forms of privacy, identity and familiarity. Cet article suit d’autres travaux sur la participation des résidents et la médiation des politiques du logement au niveau résidentiel. Il passe en revue différentes formes d’arrangements de médiation résidentielle, c’est-à-dire des formes d’arrangement qui font que les résidents se sentent plus chez eux dans leur espace domestique, associées à un renforcement de leur sens de contrôle social sur ces environnements. Après avoir examiné les donnés de plusieurs pays, en particulier le Royaume Uni et la Suède, les auteurs concluent que l’on peut en distinguer cinq formes: les arrangements de marché, les arrangements personnalisés, les associations, et les formes de management résidentiel coopératif et représentatif. Ces arrangements diffèrent entre eux quant aux pouvoirs qu’ils confèrent, à l’influence de la direction verticale du mouvement intérieur du pouvoir, à leurs effets sur l’indépendance des résidents, à leur champ d’intervention, au biais d’inclusion ou d’exclusion de leurs structures d’organisation, et à l’homogénéité ou l’hétérogénéiteé de leurs contextes sociaux. Les auteurs essaient d’expliquer ces complexes de variations en examinant les arrangements par rapport au contexte des relations sociales formelles et amicales dans les quartiers locaux où se forment ces arrangements. Nous soutenons qu’il est possible d’utiliser les travaux précédents sur la communauté et la régénération des quartiers afin d’illuminer les mécanismes de causalité qui jouent ici. Finalement, les auteurs suggèrent que la constitution de la communauté et les arrangements de médiation résidentielle peuvent s’analyser en relation avec le développement de formes phénomémologiques d’intimité, d’identité et de familiarité.  相似文献

Customer knowledge is an important organizational asset that can be exploited to yield competitive advantage to a firm. However, empirical research on the application of customer knowledge to improve operational performance has been lacking in operations management. In this study we explore how customer knowledge can be used to improve operational performance under a supply chain environment in the clothing industry. We first conceptualize the relationship between customer knowledge and operational performance and delineate their attributes based on a review of the pertinent literature. We then formulate several hypotheses based on past studies and interviews with experienced industry personnel. We develop a self-reported questionnaire to collect data to test the hypotheses. Finally, we conduct a number of regression analyses to identify the key attributes (constructs) of customer knowledge that have a significant impact on operational performance. This paper contributes to research by demonstrating that there are relationships between specific customer knowledge and different facets of operational performance, and provides practitioners in clothing manufacturing with managerial insights on how to leverage customer knowledge for operational performance improvement.  相似文献

This study piloted a survey suitable to generate statewide prevalence estimates for injury prevention practices and/or behaviours. A number of prevalence estimates of injury prevention practices and/or behaviours were generated in the pilot. For example, the prevalence of a household smoke alarm was high (732/1000 households) and yet only 44% of households had tested the functionality of the alarm in the 12 months preceding the survey. Findings of this kind point to an increasing need for primary care practitioners to play a leading role in targeting preventive strategies for injury. In addition, the survey methods and approach highlight the value of such information to health departments and non-government agencies in terms of targeting priority injury risk behaviours and the evaluation of injury-related intervention programmes. The survey has been designed so the methods can be applied nationally and internationally.  相似文献

Research employing the resource-based view (RBV) has overwhelming focused on the upside of resources, namely those that provide benefit to the firm. However, an emerging research stream suggests that the downside of resources, namely resource weaknesses, may be crucial in gaining a greater understanding of the key factors that contribute to firm performance and the ability to turnaround failing companies. We examine the infamous case of Jarvis, a firm that achieved a turnaround, but then experienced catastrophic failure. In so doing we explore the emergence of resource weaknesses, their nature and ability to combine to create a fatal organisational outcome.  相似文献

We explore ways for expressing and communicating uncertainties about food risks and the options for including views from different stakeholders, including members of the public, in risk assessment and risk management. Uncertainty is not only a major consideration of technical risk assessments but also needs to be understood within the two‐way interaction with various stakeholders, ranging from specialist risk managers to members of the public. We consider techniques for integration of technical risk assessment methodologies, including measures of the uncertainties, with social science inputs on participation processes, consumer behaviour and effective risk communication. We use case studies representing different types of risk – chemical contamination, and microbial contamination – to focus the discussion. The paper reviews the approach of ongoing interdisciplinary research which is exploring ways of communicating risks and involving members of the public and other stakeholders in defining the interfaces and processes needed.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for measuring job skills usingsurvey data on detailed work activities, and using these measuresexamines whether the utilisation of skills is growing, and howthey are valued in the labour market. We show that between 1997and 2001 there was a growth in Britain in the utilisation ofcomputing skills, literacy, numeracy, technical know-how, high-levelcommunication skills, planning skills, client communicationskills, horizontal communication skills, problem-solving, andchecking skills. Computer skills utilisation was growing thefastest, and the use of computers was becoming more sophisticated.We re-evaluate the issue of whether computers have affectedwages, taking into account existing critiques in the literature.We find that both computer skills and high-level communicationskills carry positive wage premia, as shown both in cross-sectionhedonic wage equations that control for many detailed activities,and through a within-cohorts change analysis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. This paper surveys equilibrium business cycles (EBC) theory, which has dominated the business cycle literature since the mid 1970s. It focuses primarily on the real business cycle (RBC) literature the origin of which is traced to the monetary equilibrium business cycle (MBC) model developed by Lucas (1975). RBC and MBC models are themselves related to a wider class of linear stochastic business cycle models which, following Frisch (1933), view the cycle as the result of the propagation, by the economic system, of a series of random shocks. The MBC approach highlighted the importance of monetary shocks but its failure to adequately explain observed fluctuations provided the impetus to the development of the RBC approach, which emphasises the importance of real shocks. This paper also appraises the empirical support for the RBC approach and finds it less than compelling. Given the failure of Keynesian, and equilibrium linear stochastic business cycle models to fully explain economic fluctuations, the Frischian approach to business cycle modelling is called into question. Developments to existing models, which may help to clarify our understanding of business cycle behaviour, are discussed with a view to setting out a research agenda for the 1990s and beyond.  相似文献
