One of the key factors in the success of labour federations is to have affiliate unions who actively participate and support their work. This article examines the catalysts behind union involvement with central labour bodies and presents an analysis of the organizational motivations for engagement. The article uses comparative case study analysis to examine affiliate union commitment in the United States to the American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations' state federations, area labour federations and central labour councils. Union leadership, along with contextual, interpretative and organizational factors, was found to influence the level of affiliate union involvement in central labour bodies. 相似文献

Train access and financial performance of local authorities: greater Tel Aviv as a case study 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper, we examine the assumption that as a municipality obtains train access, its financial performance improves. Using the case study of the Greater Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area (GTAMA) we conclude that this link is neither obvious nor uniform. The main outcome of the study is that, upon gaining train access, centrally-located municipalities, such as Tel Aviv, significantly increase their revenue base. Concurrently, municipalities located in the peripheral areas of the metropolis improve their performance only marginally and even decline in their attractiveness to migrants, as a result of train access. As suggested, this difference may be explained by the socio-economic structure of each municipality group, which affects their ability to take advantage of the rail. These findings send a message to planners and decision-makers that establishment of train access does not necessarily improve the financial performance of local authorities, and can even limit their demographic growth. Other factors, such as urban functionality and location, should thus be taken into account in assessing the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with rail expansion. 相似文献

This research investigates how country macro and micro images associated with both brand origin (BO) and country of manufacture (COM) impact two main dimensions of brand equity-brand image and brand quality. Whereas BO images relate positively to both dimensions of brand equity, COM images exert an impact on brand quality, not on brand image. The typicality of the brand as a representative of the country of origin moderates the impact of BO on brand equity, such that the effects of BO on brand equity are stronger when the brand is more typical. The paper focuses on the newness characteristic of realized innovations and their adoption in tourism firms. For that purpose it investigates three research problems: (i) measurement of newness level and adoption of tourism innovations; (ii) definition of tourism innovations taxonomy (needed for the measurement); and (iii) statistical analysis of innovations’ adoption in tourism destinations (result of the measurement). The paper examines the determinants of productivity growth in foreign manufacturing subsidiaries in five Central and East European (CEE) countries by analysing patterns of control, nature of firms’ capabilities and firms’ market orientations. Building on the so-called ‘subsidiary development’ perspective, we show that productivity growth is determined jointly by corporate governance, production capability and market orientation variables. Within a dominantly production-oriented mandate, CEE subsidiaries have a relatively high level of autonomy in the control of their business functions. Majority foreign equity shareholding has a significant and positive impact on subsidiaries’ productivity growth. Our results show strong regional characteristics. 相似文献

A meta-regression analysis including 167 farm level technical efficiency (TE) studies of developing and developed countries
was undertaken. The econometric results suggest that stochastic frontier models generate lower mean TE (MTE) estimates than
non-parametric deterministic models, while parametric deterministic frontier models yield lower estimates than the stochastic
approach. The primal approach is the most common technological representation. In addition, frontier models based on cross-sectional
data produce lower estimates than those based on panel data whereas the relationship between functional form and MTE is inconclusive.
On average, studies for animal production show a higher MTE than crop farming. The results also suggest that the studies for
countries in Western Europe and Oceania present, on average, the highest levels of MTE among all regions after accounting
for various methodological features. In contrast, studies for Eastern European countries exhibit the lowest estimate followed
by those from Asian, African, Latin American, and North American countries. Additional analysis reveals that MTEs are positively
and significantly related to the average income of the countries in the data set but this pattern is broken by the upper middle
income group which displays the lowest MTE.

Transnational corporations are often implicated in conflicts over environmental problems and human rights in developing countries.
As a result they become targets of both local and transnational campaigns. Given the lack of resources and influence of local
activists, campaigning groups often turn to consumer audiences abroad to pressurize a certain company or brand. That requires
agenda-setting and “framing” of the issues concerned in order to gain consumers’ attention. Local activists and campaigning
groups use the public sphere to call attention to allegedly dubious corporate policies and practices that lie behind the consumer
goods offered for sale in the Western world. Based on an analysis of the public discourse about the operations of the oil
multinational Royal Dutch/Shell in Nigeria in the year 1995, this paper suggests that once the corporation is framed as a
moral actor, it gets difficult for the corporation to deny its responsibility for human rights—even though the actual influence
of the corporation may be limited.

Abstract By experimentally inducing risk aversion, overconfidence in an investment setting is investigated, comparing the evaluation of actual investment decisions with alternative choices. After selecting their own investment, subjects confront three alternative investment choices, including the optimal one, and are asked about their willingness to pay and to substitute their own for alternative choices. Overconfidence is defined as the persistent overevaluation of the own investment decision. Results indicate that overconfidence increases (i) with the absolute deviation from optimal choices, (ii) with task complexity involving the number of risky assets, and (iii) decreases with individual perceived uncertainty. 相似文献
