A great deal of research has focused on workforce diversity. Despite an increasing number of studies, few consistent conclusions have yet to be reached about the antecedents and outcomes of diversity. Containerized freight imports into the US are growing at an average of 10% per year. This traffic is concentrated at a small number of US seaports. It is therefore important to have an accurate understanding of the flow of containers from their origin country through these seaports to their final destination. This paper develops an optimization model to estimate route flows and a corresponding multi-modal origin–destination table for containers by synthesizing data on international trade and railcar movements with a gravity model for the demand of container traffic. In this article I develop a multi- and meso-level theory of grief recovery time from the loss of a family business. The multi-level aspect of the model suggests how primarily micro theories of grief and sense-making can help explain grief recovery time at the family group level. The meso-level aspect of the model provides insight into recovery from the loss of a family business by proposing how grief dynamics interact at the individual level through emotional intelligence and the family group level through emotional capability. By supplementing theories of grief with those of sense-making, the model provides a deeper understanding of the grief recovery process. This study tested the relationships between store and customer characteristics with perceived value and customer loyalty in retailing in China. Survey data were collected from shoppers in department stores (n=200) and supermarkets (n=200) in the tier 2 coastal city of Tianjin. Data for each type of store were analysed separately using structural models. In supermarkets, value was predicted by quality and price, but for department stores, only the customer orientation of the store was significant, suggesting that customers seek different shopping experiences in each context. In each case, value mediated the links to loyalty and, for supermarkets, choice of merchandise and consumer time pressure demonstrated direct links to loyalty. This study examines how ownership concentration and corporate debt impact corporate divestitures in China. Corporate divestitures
reduce the asset base of a company and the opportunity for expropriation by majority shareholders. In emerging economies,
weak legal institutions, combined with equity ownership concentration and high corporate debt, allow majority shareholders
to avoid such disciplines. Consequently, the relationship between these governance mechanisms and divestiture activity exhibits
a pattern that is different from that in developed economies. Using archival data collected from 1,210 Chinese listed companies
during 1999–2003, we found that ownership concentration by the largest shareholder depressed corporate divestitures both in
state-controlled and in non-state-controlled firms. The negative effect of corporate debt on divestitures only existed for
state-controlled firms. Our finding provides corroborating evidence for principal–principal conflicts in emerging economies.
It suggests that corporate strategy in these countries can be better explained by taking into account the unique agency problems
