Industrial Relations Climate in the Manufacturing Sector in Singapore

The objective of this study is to assess the state of workplace industrial relations climate in the manufacturing sector in Singapore. Based on a survey of 73 manufacturing companies in Singapore and subsequent intensive study of eight of them, it was found that the overall labor-management relations in the industry were good and had improved over the past few years. Union membership was reported to have increased and this was accompanied by a perceived increase in union role and influence on labor-management relations. The findings also highlighted the need to strengthen the communication processes among the three parties—workers, unionists and management.     

THE ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE AND REGIONAL SYSTEMS OF CHINA'S CITIES*

Employing cluster analysis of selected economic indicators, this paper classifies Chinese cities into various levels according to their total urban economic strength and per capita economic performance. Regional characteristics of China's urban system are identified and policy-related measures for improving the economic efficiency of Chinese cities are suggested. In general, China''s urban economy appears to be undergoing a transition from a centrally planned economy into a market-oriented one, particularly in cities along the coast and the lower reaches of the Yangzi valley.     

Identifying Trade Structure and Macroeconomic Caveats: The Post‐crisis of Korea

First, this article introduces unit value box in addition to Azhar, Elliott and Milner's industry trade box in identifying the post‐crisis trade structure of Korea. Dynamic movements of total trade, net trade, intra‐industry trade and export‐import unit values complete the systematic analysis of trade patterns at both the aggregate and disaggregate levels. Second, macroeconomic caveats are conveyed for a small open economy to recover after the crisis, including likely but unforeseen trade disputes.     

Korea's liberalization policy directives and Korea's weakening competitiveness

Recently, Korea's export growth rate is decreasing and its trade level staggering. Since Korea has few natural resources and is highly dependent on trade, this recent trend signals a serious problem lying ahead. In this paper, we look at internal and external factors weakening Korea's competitiveness in the world market and suggest liberalization policy guidelines to improve its competitiveness.     

The signalling process in initial public offerings

This study uses a sample of Singapore IPOs to examine the signalling process at the time of a new issue of shares. The multiple regression analysis results support three testable implications of the Grinblatt and Hwang model. We show that (1) the value of the firm is positively related to the fractional holding of the issuer, (2) the degree of underpricing is an increasing function of the variance, and (3) firm value is positively related to the degree of underpricing.
