The tension between external forces for better ethics in organizations, represented by legislation such as the Sarbanes–Oxley
Act (SOX), and the call for internal forces represented by increased educational coverage, has never been as apparent. This
study examines business school faculty attitudes about recent corporate ethics lapses, including opinions about root causes,
potential solutions, and ethics coverage in their courses. In assessing root causes, faculty point to a failure of systems
such as legal/professional and management (external) and declining personal values (internal). We also found that faculty
recommend external forces as a remedy more often than increased ethics educational coverage; we contextualize this finding
with recent ethics education literature. We conclude by proposing that neither legislation nor ethics education alone are
complete when addressing widespread unethical corporate acts and offer a multi-faceted approach to ethics educational opportunities.
Jeri Mullins Beggs is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at Illinois State University. She earned her Ph.D. in marketing
at Saint Louis University. Her current research interests are ethics education, health care marketing, and social marketing.
Her work has been presented and published at various conferences and journals including most recently the Journal of Management Education, Marketing and Public Policy conference and the Consumer Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction, and Complaining Behavior conference.
She also recently served as co-editor of a special issue of Journal of Management Education on Teaching Business ethics.
Kathy Lund Dean is a member of the management department at Idaho State University. She earned her Ph.D. in organizational
behavior and philosophy from Saint Louis University. Her current research interests lie in operationalizing non-traditional
research methodologies, immersion pedagogies such as service-learning, and spiritual wholeness and authenticity in work place.
Her research has appeared in multiple journals including Journal of Management Education, Journal of Management, Spirituality, and Religion, Journal of Organizational Change Management,

Business managers that use the Internet as a major component of their marketing communications strategy face great challenges. The popularity of the Internet with consumers and businesses drives thousands of firms to promote their products and services using World Wide Web (known hereinafter as the Web) sites. Technology has created a competitive arena that enables exposure to consumers worldwide, who can now easily communicate with each other. This potential for exposure has dramatic implications for any business considering the Internet as a promotional vehicle. The growing popularity of Internet sites, where users may discuss their feelings about companies and products, allows an increased scrutiny of all aspects of business. If companies do not deal effectively with this scrutiny, brand equity is vulnerable to erosion. Therefore, all contingencies inherent in promotional efforts on the Internet must be weighed carefully. Businesses which examine the ramifications of on-line exposure are better able to create and maintain a positive Internet presence which facilitates effective Web site promotion. Traditionally, the debate over welfare reform has been infused with passion and driven by ideology, but reform itself has
proceeded in careful steps. In recent years, however, the status quo has been dramatically altered as the need for fundamental
change has become apparent as the starting point for reform. Using the state of Wisconsin’s aggressive approach to welfare
reform as a model of what is administratively possible, we portray reform as an n-person iterated coordination game in order
to examine potential outcomes under the larger rubric of ratinal decision-making and utility maximization. In so doing, we
demonstrate that game theory offers an alternative framework for dissecting and discussing complex social issues such as welfare

The recent emergence of total quality management (TQM) in the U.S. has spawned a great deal of interest in management circles as well as in the mass media. However, despite the growing number of firms that have adopted this management technique, few formal tests exist concerning the pattern of adoption as well as the changes that accompany the adoption of TQM. This paper contrasts models of production for TQM and non-TQM firms in order to explore reasons why some firms but not others have adopted the TQM approach to quality improvement. Predictions arising from such a comparison are tested using a unique data set that combines data on firms from three different sources. Our findings tend to support the proposed theory of systematic differences between firms that find it advantageous to adopt TQM and firms that do not. We also find evidence that firms adopting TQM experience greater growth in sales, employment, and capital stock. 相似文献
The Entropy Index decomposition property is utilized to construct an aggregate index of route concentration that accounts for the multiple products, customer preferences and industry concentration. The Directed Divergence Statistic, an aggregate index which measures changes in market structure at the airline specific level, is similarly decomposed. We find that route concentration more closely resembles a duopoly than an industry with 16 major carriers. Further, the Directed Divergence Statistic decomposition reveals that while the industry seems to have absorbed the loss of national three carriers, those remaining engineered substantial changes in their product offerings to accommodate passengers.
Referrals from existing clients are frequently used by organizations to obtain fresh prospects. The approach is commonly believed to be beneficial because the referred prospects are considered to be superior candidates relative to contacts gained from cold calling. However, the effect of the referral on the client is frequently ignored. Predictions of the Information Availability Explanation were used to develop a hypothesis concerning attitudinal effects among individuals who were asked for referrals. Clients who failed to provide a solicited referral developed a significantly less positive attitude than clients who were not asked for a referral. The results suggest that when considering the use of the referral method, the potential benefits of gaining superior prospects must be balanced against the potential undermining of clients' attitudes. Previous studies have found that dividend initiations and omissions convey important information about subsequent earnings changes. However, this finding may be subject to a sample survival bias. We find that survivorship does not affect the positive relation between dividend changes and past earnings changes. Also, we find dividend omitting firms are able to generate significantly positive earnings one to two years after the omission. However, contrary to previous findings, firms' earnings are not significantly increased following the dividend initiation. The results suggest that survivorship tends to bias inference toward finding that dividends signal future earnings. 相似文献
This article examines the role of middle managers in creating change in the Irish health service from interviews conducted with middle and senior level managers. The research examines the interface between top‐down and bottom‐up approaches to change and contributes to showing how ambivalence towards change by middle managers can at the same time contribute to the dismantling of structures and systems that are a necessary precondition for successful change to take place. However, the additional workload and tensions created by dealing with the interface between top‐down and bottom‐up changes may result in considerable additional workload and stress for the managers themselves. 相似文献
The United States and Canada are similar in many ways, yet they have taken different approaches to agricultural policy. This paper discusses what affect the different constitutional arrangements have had on the development of agricultural policy. Constitutions can affect the policy bargaining process in several ways: they determine who has access to the bargaining process, what is the legal set of policy options and what is the admissible coalition. The two countries' Constitutions differ in where regions have access to the bargaining process, the use of the courts and the size of the admissible coalition. These differences have led to divergent policies, which are evidenced by the response to the recent drop in commodity prices. 相似文献
