We estimate the impact of shipping cost on development for landlocked developing countries (LLDCs). Since container trade is important to them, we construct a country-specific measure of shipping cost, called HarpexCost, which combines the global cost of container shipping with information on how exposed to container shipping each LLDC is. We employ the common correlated effects (CCE) estimator of Pesaran (Econometrica, 2006; 55: 967) to first estimate the impact of HarpexCost on the LLDCs’ development, and then recover the actual impact of shipping cost from these estimates. Overall, we observe that shipping cost has large negative effects on the LLDCs. Building upon these results, we provide new estimates on the cost of landlockedness and how trade benefits their development. 相似文献

We introduce externalities into the classical model by Shapley and Scarf; that is, agents care about others and their preferences are defined over allocations rather than over single indivisible goods. This paper investigates the extent to which access to credit, public financial incentives and tax financial incentives affect export performance using the EU-EFIGE/Bruegel-Unicredit data set, covering firms within Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary and the UK during the 2008 global financial crisis. The results show that firms receiving credit or benefiting from public financial incentives display higher export intensity and export a greater number of product lines compared to those that did not, especially in countries with better access to credit and/or financial incentives during the crisis. Further, firms benefiting from tax financial incentives show a better export performance compared to those that did not, regardless of the degree of access to credit and/or financial incentives in the country in which they operate. In addition, the effect of access to credit and public finance incentives on export performance is found to be size-dependent, while the effect of tax financial incentives is not. We suggest that governments should promote publicly funded financial incentives along with conventional schemes, such as R&D subsidies, to promote exports, particularly during a period of financial crisis. 相似文献

There is no better place to explore the relationship of industry enclaves to urban life than China, where traditional danweis (work units) have coexisted with new foreign direct investment enclaves. Here we draw on original interviews with workers at Wuhan Iron and Steel Company (WISCO) and Foxconn in the city of Wuhan to examine industry enclaves old and new in terms of their spatial arrangement, work, institutions, and social life and identity. The article is one of the first to integrate urban and economic geographical perspectives on the subject of enclaves. It provides evidence of similarities and contrasts in the spatial arrangement of work, institutions, life and identity centred on industry enclaves old and new. These contrasts reflect wider relations between the state and the market and between social subject and commodified labour in China. In conclusion, we identify several research directions concerning the scale, diversity and reach of urban enclavism in China and beyond. 相似文献

This paper proposes a new method for estimating true cost-of-living (Konüs) indices, for large numbers of commodities, using data only on prices, aggregate budget shares and aggregate expenditure. Conventional chain indices are path-dependent unless income elasticities are (implausibly) all equal to 1. The method allows this difficulty to be overcome. I show that to estimate a Konüs index, only income and not price elasticities are required. The method is applied to estimate a Konüs price index for 70 products covering nearly all the UK's Retail Prices Index over 1974–2004, using the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System. This paper extends recent studies of the January effect by investigating the evolution of the daily pattern of the effect across size deciles. Our evidence documents a sizable mean reverting component beginning in the latter part of January and a shorter duration of the seasonal effect. Despite lower abnormal returns in the second part of January, higher abnormal returns in the first part of January keep the magnitude of the January effect unchanged. Further analysis of daily trading volumes suggests a stable trading volume intensity in the first part of January and a substantial decline in trading volume intensity in the second part of January. 相似文献

risk of default), based on stochastic house-price and interest-rate models. As well as the development of a highly accurate
numerical scheme to tackle the resulting partial differential equations, this paper also exploits singular perturbation theory
(a mathematically rigorous procedure, based on the idea of the smallness of the volatilities), whereby mortgage valuation
can be accurately approximated by very simple closed-form solutions. Determination of equilibrium contract rates, previously
requiring many computational hours is reduced to just a few seconds, rendering this a highly useful portfolio management tool;
these approximations compare favorably with the full numerical solutions. The method is of wide applicability in US or other

Recent research provides evidence of a market premium accruing to firms that meet or beat analysts’ forecasts. We find similar
results for our sample of firms. However, we also find a market premium for firms that meet or beat time-series forecasts,
and that the highest market premium accrued to firms that meet or beat both analysts’ and time-series forecasts. These findings
are supported by assessments of future financial performance over the next two subsequent years. Our findings are consistent
with the notion that when time-series benchmark is used in conjunction with analysts’ forecasts, investors obtain a more reliable
(i.e., less noisy) signal regarding whether firms have actually met or beaten market expectations.
