Following the devastating tsunamis of 26 December 2004, Australians were eager to donate money to the relief effort. An issue for many was identifying a trustworthy agency; this could be done through direct knowledge of an organisation, or by depending on the recommendations of a source whose competence and integrity was readily accepted. The Australian government provided this external credibility to the 34 charities it listed on its official tsunami assistance website. However, an investigation of these agencies and the actual appeals conducted by them indicates that the government may have waived its normal requirements by moving away from its two accountability programs, AusAID and ACFID accreditation.  相似文献

This paper examines the factors influencing the probability and years of ownership of four technological products: microwaves, home computers, video cassette recorders (VCRs) and compact disc players. Family income increased the probability of ownership of microwaves and video cassette recorders and the length of ownership of microwaves. Males were more likely to own a computer than females and the probability and length of computer ownership increased with educational level. Innovation adapters as measured by an innovation index had owned microwaves and VCRs longer. The identification of the indicators of product adoption provides guidance for future acceptance of innovative products.  相似文献

This paper provides a content analysis of portrayals of children's participation in household tasks in national television advertisements within the U.S.A. The analysis indicates that children are rarely shown working in the home, even when they could help. Furthermore, parents are shown routinely performing tasks children could have done for themselves. The resulting stereotypes are clearly drawn: children are shown to be non-productive and parents are portrayed as servants. Such portrayals may be counter-productive in the context of growing time pressures in the household and the potential benefits that families might realize by working together towards common goals.  相似文献

This paper examines design alternatives for emissions trading credits and assesses their relative performance given several sources of uncertainty endemic to market-based environmental regulatory programs. Facilities regulated in such programs face significant uncertainty about their total emissions. Uncertainty arises due to changes in production-demand schedules for their product, imperfect knowledge of abatement efficiency, and other informational lags. Depending on the design of the trading credit, this uncertainty can result in significant market price volatility and undesirable increases in peak emissions (in the absence of additional costly market institutions, such as contingent contracts and brokered insurance). In addition to the design alternatives, the paper considers allocation alternatives to alleviate these unintended effects and also discusses the value of properly designed reconciliation markets .  相似文献
