In the traditional retirement scenario, individuals work full-time or part-time until a given age, and then stop working abruptly.
From the individual’s point of view, it seems more attractive to have a smooth transition, with gradual retirement. In Sweden
and other European countries, specific gradual retirement programs have been created in the past 20 years, first in combination
with early retirement programs and later to increase labour market participation of older workers. This paper surveys the
existing literature on gradual retirement in the US and Europe and analyzes the relevance of gradual retirement in the Netherlands
as a tool to keep people employed longer.

We investigate how the budget levels embedded in budget-based contracts affect individual effort and risk-taking. We show that, from a wealth maximization perspective, a tradeoff exists between motivating effort and encouraging risk-taking. We illustrate an inverted-U relation between budget levels and effort. Budget levels and effort are positively correlated until budgets become very difficult, at which point individuals “give up.” We illustrate an opposing, U-shaped, relation between budget levels and risk-taking. Low budgets provide the flexibility to take greater risks, whereas high budgets induce individuals to “play it safe” to ensure budget attainment. Risky projects provide the greatest probability of reaching very high (stretch) budgets. We conduct a laboratory experiment to empirically test this economic proposition vis-à-vis extant psychology research. Consistent with security-potential/aspiration theory, we find that individuals are willing to sacrifice expected wealth to either meet the budget or increase their potential payoffs. Our results suggest that the effort-risk tradeoff is mitigated at low budget levels, thereby increasing firm welfare, but is exacerbated at high budget levels, reducing firm welfare. Collectively, our results highlight the importance of understanding how managerial accounting practices such as budgets affect the various determinants of performance and not just performance per se. China's Sloping Land Conversion Program has been implemented since 2002. It aims to achieve goals of ecological recovery and poverty alleviation, by retiring steeply sloping land from crop production and freeing surplus agricultural labor for off-farm activities. Given the huge investment that has been poured into it, and its ecological and social impacts, this government-initiated program has attracted significant academic attention and triggered a flood of debate. Since 2004, the debate has concentrated on the sustainability of the program. Although targets have been overachieved in some provinces, concern has still emerged regarding the livelihood of farmers after subsidies stop. The present paper analyzes the implementation of the Sloping Land Conversion Program in Ningxia Autonomous Region, with a focus on the required social capital for sustained participation o f farmers and the development of off-farm economic activities. 相似文献

This article first addresses the question of “why” we teach business ethics. Our answer to “why” provides both a response
to those who oppose business ethics courses and a direction for course content. We believe a solid, comprehensive course in
business ethics should address not only moral philosophy, ethical dilemmas, and corporate social responsibility – the traditional
pillars of the disciple – but also additional areas necessary to make sense of the goings-on in the business world and in
the news. These “new pillars,” that we advocate include moral psychology, organizational design and behavior, motivational
theory, and a unit on how society, business, and law interact. This last unit builds upon the work of Francis P. McHugh (1988)
who urged an integration of “disciplines related to business ethics.” Our seventh pillar would encompass an integration of
law, socio-political theory, and policy to demonstrate how business helps construct its own regulatory framework. The concluding
recommendation is for a comprehensive “Seven Pillars” of business ethics approach.

This paper studies experimentally how firms choose between using a centralized market and bilateral negotiations to recruit new personnel. In the market firms interact with several workers but do not have information about workers’ behavior in the past. In the bilateral negotiations firms negotiate bilaterally with prospective workers and learn about workers’ performance in previous jobs. We show that the interaction between social preferences, the incompleteness of contracts and the existence of information about a worker’s past performance provides an explanation for firms forgoing market opportunities and bilaterally negotiating with a worker. We observe that approximately 30% of all job contracts were bilaterally negotiated when these contracts are incomplete as opposed to only 10% when contracts were complete. The surplus from trade is higher when incomplete contracts can be bilaterally negotiated, which can be attributed to the presence of information. 相似文献

Family caregivers perform a significant role in the care of patients with chronic illnesses and prescribed life-long complex home care treatments. Both quantitative and qualitative data from this study suggest the mental health burdens and financial costs of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) caregiving are extensive. In this study, the variability in HPN out-of-pocket expenses and the uncertainty of incurring such extensive costs created additional financial worries within already stressed families. Based on these data, interventions to improve caregivers' sleepiness, depression, and physical health could be hypothesized to improve both patients' and caregivers' quality of life and reduce the frequency of patients' catheter-related infections. These specific nursing interventions also could improve caregiver health and subsequently reduce the costs of caregivers' health care. 相似文献
