Academic and policy debate has centered around an apparent "underinvestment in conservation." This paper outlines traditional explanations for underinvestment and presents a prospect theory analysis of individual conservation behavior. On the basis of investment criteria, individuals seem to discriminate against conservation investments. While these decisions might appear rational as life style decisions, individual choice across different household appliances shows little consistency. For policymaking purposes, understanding and modeling actual behavior is crucial to maximizing social welfare. The insight of certain positive models of human behavior supports economic efficiency arguments for marketplace intervention. This paper argues that because individuals making conservation investment decisions apparently do not act according to the dictates of utilitarian economics, utility sponsored conservation programs are justified on economic efficiency grounds. Finally, in light of prospect theory considerations, the paper suggests marketing guidelines for conservation investments sponsored by electric utilities.  相似文献

While accounting research has demonstrated the role of a decision maker's own emotions during judgments, psychology research proposes that others’ emotions provide an informational signal to assess an opponent's limits, cooperativeness, and toughness during bargaining. We examine how a bargaining opponent's emotions provide information signals that can be used by a selling division manager during transfer pricing decisions and whether informal control system choices by corporate management to foster cooperation can create a context that influences how managers react to these signals. In an experiment, when informal controls to encourage cooperation were absent (less collaborative environment), managers’ selling price estimates were more conciliatory when the opponent was described as displaying negative emotions than when described as displaying positive emotions. However, when informal controls to cooperate were present (more collaborative environment), managers’ selling price estimates were more conciliatory when the opponent displayed positive rather than negative emotions. Path analyses suggest that managers’ perception of their opponents’ signals is the mechanism by which opponents’ emotions influence transfer‐price decisions. This study highlights the role of others’ emotions as information signals during accounting bargaining and provides insight into the context dependency of opponents’ emotions under various control system structures.  相似文献

Until recently, considerable effort has been devoted to the estimation of panel data regression models without adequate attention being paid to the drivers of interaction amongst cross-section and spatial units. We discuss some new methodologies in this emerging area and demonstrate their use in measurement and inferences on cross-section and spatial interactions. Specifically, we highlight the important distinction between spatial dependence driven by unobserved common factors and those based on a spatial weights matrix. We argue that purely factor-driven models of spatial dependence may be inadequate because of their connection with the exchangeability assumption. The three methods considered are appropriate for different asymptotic settings; estimation under structural constraints when N is fixed and T → ∞, whilst the methods based on GMM and common correlated effects are appropriate when TN → ∞. Limitations and potential enhancements of the existing methods are discussed, and several directions for new research are highlighted.  相似文献

In this editorial, we summarize and comment on the papers published in issue 11.1 so as to raise the bar in applied spatial economic research and highlight new trends. The first paper employs the J-test to discriminate between two economic-theoretical explanations for the wage curve. The second applies a two-step ML procedure to measure the impact of volatility on economic growth. The third tests for endogeneity in the Spatial lag of X (SLX) model and whether or not the model should be extended to contain a spatial lag. The fourth utilizes the gravity model to test whether or not grids should be merged into larger units of observations. Finally, the last adopts a time-space recursive model to test the ripple effect and (linguistic) border effect hypotheses on housing prices in Belgium.  相似文献

This paper develops a new identification result for the causal ordering of observation units in a recursive network or directed acyclic graph. Inferences are developed for an unknown spatial weights matrix in a spatial lag model under the assumption of recursive ordering. The performance of the methods in finite sample settings is very good. Application to data on portfolio returns produces interesting new evidences on the contemporaneous lead–lag relationships between the portfolios and generates superior predictions.  相似文献

This editorial summarizes the papers published in issue 14(1) so as to raise the bar in applied spatial economic research and highlight new trends. The first paper applies the Shapley-based decomposition approach to determine the impact of firm-, linkage- and location-specific factors to the survival probability of enterprises. The second paper applies Bayesian comparison methods to identify simultaneously the most likely spatial econometric model and spatial weight matrix explaining new business creation. The third paper compares the performance of continuous and discrete approaches to explain subjective well-being across space. The fourth paper applies a multiple imputation approach to determine regional purchasing power parities at the NUTS-3 level using data available at the NUTS-2 level. Finally, the last paper constructs a regional input–output table for Japan from its national counterpart using and comparing the performance of four non-survey techniques.  相似文献

This editorial summarizes the papers published in issue 13(3) so as to raise the bar in applied spatial economic research and highlight new trends. The first paper challenges the home market hypothesis that large countries host more firms relative to their size than small countries by considering the lobbying activities of multinational firms. The second paper analyzes the implications of a spatial weight matrix used to estimate a spatial econometric model that depends on an endogenous economic variable. By adding a spatial context, the third paper provides a novel contribution to the literature on international norms in de facto measures of human rights performance. The fourth paper examines the determinants of accepting informal work in Poland. The fifth paper deals with non-stationarity and cointegration in a dynamic spatial econometric panel data model when the number of observations in the time – rather than in the cross-sectional– domain tends to infinity.  相似文献

We develop a model of labor productivity as a combination of capital-labour ratio, vintage of capital stock, regional externalities, and total factor productivity (TFP). The skewness of TFP distribution is related to different growth theories. While negative skewness is consistent with the neo-Schumpeterian idea of catching up with leaders, zero skewness supports the neoclassical view that deviations from the frontier reflect only idiosyncratic productivity shocks. We argue that positive skewness is consistent with an economy where exogenous technology is combined with non-transferable knowledge accumulated in specific sectors and regions. This argument provides the framework for an empirical model based on stochastic frontier analysis. The model is used to analyse regional and sectoral inequalities in Denmark.
