ABSTRACTIn this article, we identify and describe the sequential order-of-entry problem. The sequential order-of-entry problem arises when, after having identified a desirable set of country markets to enter, firms are unable (because of budgetary constraints), or unwilling (because of possible learning or strategic issues), to enter all at once. The question then arises whether some sequences to entering the desirable set of country markets are better than others? Answering this question is shown to be nontrivial. The article outlines a number of arguments for the existence of superior sequences to entering a set of desirable country markets, and develops normative and dynamic frameworks to aid in the identification and evaluation of sequences. 相似文献

Although the financial and strategic aspects of mergers and acquisitions are well researched, little work has been done on the human resource development implications of this popular topic. The purpose of this case study research project was to explore the timing and scope of HRD involvement in four organizations recently involved in a merger or acquisition, by using three theoretical models as lenses. The results demonstrated that HRD normally was not involved in the initial decision‐making to merge or acquire, even though post‐deal HRD initiatives, particularly related to change management, were perceived as critical indicators of success. 相似文献

This article reviews the literature on artificial neural networks (ANNs) applied to accounting and finance problems and summarizes the ‘suggestions’ from this literature. The first section reviews the basic foundation of ANNs to provide a common basis for further elaboration and suggests criteria that should be used to determine whether the use of an ANN is appropriate. The second section of the paper discusses development of ANN models including: selection of the learning algorithm, choice of the error and transfer functions, specification of the architecture, preparation of the data to match the architecture, and training of the network The final section presents some general guidelines and a brief summary of research progress and open research questions. In this article, we examine line manager prioritisation of HR roles and the consequences for employee commitment in a health‐care setting. Our analysis is based on a quantitative, multi‐actor study (509 employees and 67 line managers) in four Dutch hospitals. Using sense‐giving as a theoretical lens, we demonstrate that, in addition to the effects of high commitment HRM, prioritising the Employee Champion role alone and the Employee Champion and Strategic Partner roles in combination is associated with higher employee commitment. We argue that through performing roles that are evocative of deep‐seated values, such as excellent patient care and concern for others, line managers can have a positive effect on staff attitudes. In a sector often beleaguered by staff turnover, exhaustion and burnout, we offer an important, empirically based framework that has the potential to improve employee commitment and, from there, enhance performance. 相似文献

This paper examines the literature and research on unions relevant to the effective adoption of High Performance Work Practices. It demonstrates that unions that have a cooperative relationship with management can play an important role in overcoming barriers to the effective adoption of practices that have been linked to organizational competitiveness through the development and application of human capital. In particular, unions have the unique advantage of delivering independent voice that cannot be substituted by management. Not only can unions make a contribution to organization competitiveness but they can also ensure that employees benefit from High Performance Work Practice adoption and in doing so secure their own relevance. The contribution that unions can make is inhibited by management and union's reluctance to engage in an integrative relationship and an institutional context that does not value unions. Organizations that want to capture the value that unions can add must move away from a pluralist model of autocratic management, hostile unions and adversarial industrial relations, beyond a unitarist model that sees no role for unions, to a cooperative partnership with unions that shares the gains of implementing High Performance Work Practices. 相似文献

From 1992 through early 2004, crude oil prices were predictable by using OECD’s relative inventories and OPEC’s excess production
capacity. However, since 2004, estimated inventories and excess production capacity under-predict crude oil prices. Using
3-D graphical analyzes, three regimes are identified in crude oil markets during the period from January 1992 to December
2007, reflecting market conditions and OPEC policy changes. These graphics show the changing relationship between crude oil
price, inventories and excess production capacity. To reflect this, a ratchet variable, derived from cumulative excess production
capacity, is incorporated into the forecasting model to reflect the changing behavior on both demand and supply sides. This
model provides improved forecasts for the post Gulf War I time period over models without the ratchet mechanism.
