An improved generalized moments estimator for a spatial moving average error model

Following Arnold and Wied (2010), we suggest an improved generalized moments estimator for the spatial moving average error model which takes explicitly into account that the moment conditions are based on OLS residuals rather than the true disturbances.

本文通过区位商分析法,研究了陕、川、渝承接加工贸易产业转移的区位条件,最后提出,为促进东部地区加工贸易产业西移,三地要积极争取国家加工贸易西移的政策倾斜,要多途径降低物流成本吸引加工贸易产业西移,要立足区位优势承接东部地区加工贸易产业转移。     

Factor Substitution in U.S. Manufacturing: Does Plant Size Matter?

We use micro data for 10,412 U.S. manufacturing plants to estimate the degrees of factor substitution by industry and by plant size. We find that (1) capital, labor, energy and materials are substitutes in production, and (2) the degrees of substitution among inputs are quite similar across plant sizes in a majority of industries. Two important implications of these findings are that (1) small plants are typically as flexible as large plants in factor substitution; consequently, economic policies such energy conservation policies that result in rising energy prices would not cause negative effects on either large or small U.S. manufacturing plants; and (2) since energy and capital are found to be substitutes, the 1973 energy crisis is unlikely to be a significant factor contributing to the post 1973 productivity slowdown.     

Learning-by-Doing and Strategic Trade Policy

The paper models international rivalry between a domestic firm that is going through a learning-by-doing phase, and a mature foreign rival. It is shown that the optimal production subsidy for the domestic firm depends on the degree of strategic sophistication of the foreign firm. Optimal production subsidy rules are derived under various scenarios. They are shown to be very sensitive to the specification of the game between the domestic and the foreign firms. Whether the optimal subsidy should decrease over time depends on the strategic sophistication of the foreign firm.

Individualism,Collectivism and Management in China: Does Atlas Shrug in China?

Rand’s philosophy of objectivism has enjoyed a recent resurgence of interest in the United States, but little is known about how it is conceptualized in non-Western cultures and how it influences business practice. This paper investigates and supports the existence of a form of objectivism within the Chinese culture, drawing into question the notion that Chinese society is inherently collective. Results concerning an anticipated metaphysical dimension were inconclusive, suggesting that Chinese who embody epistemological, ethical, and political aspects of objectivism lack a corresponding and clear notion of causality, time, and identity.     

The Role of Physical Environment in Leisure Service Consumption: Evidence From a Ski Resort Setting

Despite the importance of physical environment in hedonic service consumption, little is known about the extent to which physical environment influences ski resort visitors’ cognition, emotion, and behaviors. This study investigated the relationships among physical environmental stimuli (i.e., layout accessibility, aesthetics, cleanliness, and other visitors), perceived quality of physical environment, excitement, and behavioral intentions in ski resort. This study also attempted to test the moderating role of enduring involvement in the formation of behavioral intentions. Results showed that cleanliness and other visitors significantly and positively influenced visitors’ perceived quality of physical environment and excitement. The results suggest that physical environment is of great importance for the ski resort business. Perceived quality was indeed a significant predictor of excitement, which, in turn, positively influenced behavioral intentions. Finally, the study found that the effect of excitement on behavioral intentions was significant across high and low enduring involvement groups.
