Previous research in the price-quality area has largely limited its focus to the normal price range and has concentrated on physical goods almost entirely. This study examines the effect of offering a service for free and at an exaggerated price on the perception of its quality. Consistent with the theory developed in this paper, the experimental results suggest that when the tested services are offered for free and for exaggerated prices, they are perceived as lower in quality than when they are offered in a normal price range.  相似文献

In February 2006, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced a one-time opportunity for firms with misclassified cash flow items to correct these errors without issuing an official restatement. To assess the impact of these reclassifications, we determine the types of firms affected by this allowance and the types of reclassifications in the operating, investing, and financing categories of the cash flow statement. We find that, consistent with the SEC’s concerns, firms overstated net operating cash flows and understated net investing cash flows, thereby misrepresenting cash flows. In addition, the most frequent line-item reclassifications echo the SEC’s concerns about the presentation of discontinued operations and dealer floor plan financing arrangements. Insurance claim proceeds and beneficial interests in securitized loans, however, appear less problematic than the SEC expected. Overall, our findings indicate that the SEC’s plan was relatively successful and, for firms that took advantage of the allowance period, these cash flow restatements only exerted a marginally negative effect in the capital market.  相似文献

This paper conducts an empirical analysis of the cultural affinity hypothesis put forth by Calomiris, et al. (1994) in the mortgage lending market. This hypothesis implies that white loan officers, because of a lack of familiarity with minority applicants, will rely more heavily on characteristics that can be observed at low cost (e.g., objective loan application measures) in evaluating the creditworthiness of minority applicants relative to white applicants. Using a cleansed sample of 1,991 loan applications drawn from data collected by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the results of the analysis were consistent with the cultural affinity hypothesis. In particular, we found that marginal black and Hispanic applicants appeared to be held to higher quantitative standards on such objective factors as credit history and debt obligation ratios than were similarly situated marginal white applicants.  相似文献

Significant negative valuation effects are widely acknowledged for firms announcing seasoned equity offerings. This result is consistent with theoretical models linking new equity issues to increased adverse-selection costs, lower management ownership in the firm, misuse of free cash flow, or expectations for earnings declines. Also increasingly evident, insiders trade around corporate announcements. We test the hypothesis that insider trading and announcements of new equity issues serve as joint signals in the market's evaluation of prospective capital investment projects. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that insider trading is related to market reaction to announcements of new equity issues.  相似文献

There has long been a tension between the roles of the university in servicing the needs of sub‐national economies and civil societies, those of the national state and those of learning and the pursuit of knowledge in an abstract sense. The position in liberal democracies through much of the twentieth century can be accurately characterized by a significant degree of separation and segregation between the university, the state and the market. Recently, however, it has been posited that the balance is shifting away from relative autonomy towards a new ‘mode of knowledge production’ in which the growing engagement of universities with their regions and localities is an important aspect. The first part of this article explores the knowledge economy rhetorics which have come to dominate public policy rationales in many liberal democracies and interrelationships with questions of territory and scale. Second, the implications for universities are considered as they are confronted by a number of challenges and choices in navigating the waters of increasing societal expectations. Finally, the article highlights key questions that emerge from our preliminary overview of these issues within a wider research agenda around universities, the knowledge economy and regional development. Depuis longtemps, une tension existant entre les rôles qu'a l'université dans la satisfaction des besoins des économies sub‐nationales et des sociétés civiles, de ceux de l'État ou de ceux de l'enseignement, et la quête du savoir au sens abstrait du terme. Pendant une bonne partie du vingtième siècle, dans les démocraties libérales, la situation a pu se définir par un degré très net de séparation entre université, État et marché. Toutefois, récemment, certains ont suggéré que l'équilibre se décalait, d'une autonomie relative vers un nouveau ‘mode de production du savoir’ dans lequel l'intervention croissante des universités vis‐à‐vis de leur région et sites locaux constitue un aspect important. La première partie de l'article explore le discours de l'économie du savoir, lequel a envahi la logique de la politique publique dans nombre de démocraties libérales, ainsi que les inter‐relations avec les questions de territoire et d'échelle. La deuxième partie s'intéresse aux implications pour les universités, celles‐ci étant confrontées à de multiples défis et choix en parcourant l'océan des attentes sociétales croissantes. Pour finir, sont présentées les questions‐clés qui émergent de l'étude préalable de ces problèmes effectuée dans le cadre d'un programme de recherches plus vaste autour des universités, de l'économie du savoir et du développement régional.  相似文献

In this paper the need to base the design and marketing of nutrition in the hospitality industry upon consumer segmentation of the market is discussed. Characteristics of existing programs are summarized as are the factors contributing to their success or failure. An understanding of how to market nutrition programs successfully in the hospitality industry is essential, as nearly all hotel chains and many independent and chain restaurants have developed nutrition promotions or will be implementing nutrition programs in the next two years.  相似文献

This paper presents a model of household residential search and mobility that focuses on microeconomic elements of household behavior and incorporates housing market features. The model is cast explicitly in terms of a rigorous model of housing demand, allowing the benefits from moving to be measured as the compensating income variation of the potential change in consumption. The empirical results indicate that large changes in economic variables, such as income and prices produce only small potential gains from moving and that a major factor in the moving decision is the magnitude of search and moving costs.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates a time-series production technique to quantify the deer harvest and deer hunting benefits of controlled burns or prescribed fire. The time series regression model showed a statistically significant and positive effect of prescribed fire on deer harvest. The net economic value of the resulting additional deer hunting benefit was estimated using the Contingent Valuation Method at $ 98 per additional deer harvested. The initial deer hunting benefits of an additional 1,000 acres of prescribed burning are between $ 2,674 and $ 3,128 or $ 2-3 per acre. The costs of prescribed burning greatly exceed these benefits, suggesting that deer hunting benefits represent only a small part of the multiple use benefits of prescribed fire.  相似文献

This paper provides new evidence on the price and income elasticities of demand for rental housing by low income households. Housing expenditures of households participating in the Housing Allowance Demand Experiment and receiving housing allowances in the form of a proportional rent rebate are analyzed. These rent rebates experimentally vary the effective relative price of housing and thus enable estimation of the price elasticities. Natural income variation enables estimation of income elasticities. Analysis is carried out using two functional forms and a variety of models of housing dynamics. The estimated income and price elasticities of demand are 0.36 and −0.22, respectively. When the sample is restricted to include only households headed by couples, the elasticity estimates are 0.47 for income and −0.36 for price. These estimates are lower (in absolute value) than have been previously estimated and it is suggested that this may be due to the low-income nature of the sample.  相似文献
