This paper examines the political economy of tourism representations and destination imaging in Brazil and its effect on tourism impacts in the country. The central argument is that the way Brazil and its women are represented in tourist images has an important effect on how they are consumed. By investigating the representation of Brazil and its women during colonial times by Europeans, by the Brazilian Government and by the contemporary Western media, this study explores how these representations have made Brazil a sexual playground for tourists. The study contributes to the tourism literature by concluding that Brazil's image is not a direct outcome of tourism representations alone; rather its destination image is strongly connected with complex historical, political and cultural processes. 相似文献

We analyze how information about candidate quality affects the choice of electoral platforms made by an office-motivated political challenger. The incumbent is of known quality and located at the ideal policy of the voter. The voter cares for both policy and the candidates' quality and can learn about the challenger's quality by buying information. A high-quality challenger then has an incentive to signal her quality by choosing a policy that induces the voter to buy information. We first study the benchmark case in which the information is supplied exogenously, and its quality is independent of the challenger's platform; this yields multiple equilibria and indeterminacy of equilibrium platforms. By contrast, when the information is supplied by a profit-maximizing media outlet, its quality depends on the challenger's platform and we obtain a unique equilibrium platform. In particular, when the incumbent's quality is relatively low, the media coverage rises and the challenger's platform diverges further from the voter's ideal policy as the voter's preference for quality increases. 相似文献

In this article, the authors present a new perspective on responsible marketing. We discuss if and how social enterprises can present a new understanding of responsible marketing. Relevant publications (14 on social entrepreneurship, 40 on marketing in non-profit organizations and social enterprises and 41 papers on marketing) are selected and reviewed. The result of the literature analysis and synthesis show that social enterprises can gain from a more formal, systematic approach to marketing. Since social enterprises prioritize social goals over business results, successful adoption of marketing policies and practices can help then create a blueprint for responsible marketing. Marketing of socially relevant products and services by social enterprises thus create a new paradigm of responsible marketing. Such models can also be useful for larger corporations who look at social business and shared value creation as part of their business and marketing strategy. 相似文献

We present an efficient bargaining model and analyse the welfare effects of unionization, where rival exporting governments employ strategic export policy. The domestic firm is unionized and conducts a Nash bargain with its union to determine wage and employment. The union may be wage oriented, wage neutral or employment oriented. The foreign firm is non-unionized. Stability of the reaction function equilibrium in policy space is sufficient for the following results: (i) domestic welfare increases with the degree of wage orientation; (ii) an increase in the union's bargaining power leads to higher (lower) domestic welfare if the union is wage (employment) oriented; (iii) if the domestic social marginal cost of labour is less than or equal to the foreign marginal cost, domestic market share is higher under wage orientation. 相似文献

Analysis of the behavior of technical inefficiency with respect to parameters and variables of a stochastic frontier model
is a neglected area of research in frontier literature. An attempt in this direction, however, has recently been made. It
has been shown that in a “standard” stochastic frontier model that both the firm level technical inefficiency and the production
uncertainty are monotonically decreasing with observational error. In this paper we show, considering a stochastic frontier
model whose error components are jointly distributed as truncated bivariate normal, that this property holds if and only if
the distribution of observational error is negatively skewed. We also derive a necessary and sufficient condition under which
both firm level technical inefficiency and production uncertainty are monotonically increasing with noise-inefficiency correlation.
We next propose a new measure of the industry level production uncertainty and establish the necessary and sufficient condition
for firm level technical inefficiency and production uncertainty to be monotonically increasing with industry level production
uncertainty. We also study the limiting probabilistic behavior of these conditions under different parametric configuration
of our model. Finally we carry out Monte Carlo simulations to study the sample behavior of the population monotonic property
of the firm level technical inefficiency and production uncertainty in our model.

The distribution dynamics of incomes across Indian states are examined using the entire income distribution. Unlike standard regression approaches this approach allows us to identify specific distributional characteristics such as polarisation and stratification. The period between 1965 and 1997 exhibits the formation of two convergence clubs: one at 50% and another at 125% of the national average income. Income disparities across the states declined over the 1960s and then increased from the 1970s to the nineties. Conditioning exercises reveal that the observed polarisation is associated with the disparate distribution of infrastructure. In particular, education, the extent of irrigation and literacy are found to be associated with the formation of the lower convergence club. 相似文献

This paper suggests that if parental nurturing is a dominating force in human capital formation then income redistribution
may not promote economic growth. In particular, if, consistently with empirical evidence, parental human capital complements
investment in a child’s education and yields increasing returns in the intergenerational production of human capital, income
redistribution may have an adverse impact on the growth rate of average human capital. Redistribution shifts resources towards
the less educationally-productive families and thus in the presence of credit markets imperfections and increasing returns,
it reduces the aggregate level of investment in human capital. Moreover, if the degree of increasing returns is sufficiently
large to produce sustained growth, this adverse effect on human capital formation may outweigh the conventional beneficial
effects of redistribution that arises from the interaction between a production technology exhibiting diminishing returns

Consider the problem of how agents in a pure exchange competitive framework acquire their desired bundles of goods through a process of decentralized trade, i.e., in the absence of an auctioneer. Since the agents' wants are not mutually coincident, a medium of exchange is necessary to conduct trade. One relevant question to ask in this context is what property a commodity should possess in order for it to be eligible as a medium of exchange? This note discovers one such attribute, that the good be included in the final consumption vector of each agent. The condition is an improvement over an earlier one due to Ostroy and Starr (1974) which requires each agent to have large quantities of the medium of exchange in her/his initial endowment of commodities. The paper constructs a model of endogenous growth where infrastructure is an accumulable stock generating a nonrival input service. A typical market economy cannot attain the socially optimum steady state path, since nonrivalry precludes competitive pricing of infrastructure. However, there exist agent specific prices for the infrastructural service, a price for the infrastructural stock, a rate of interest, and a subsidy for the representative household that can sustain the optimal path as a dynamic Lindahl equilibrium. The rates of return from physical and infrastructural capital equal the rate of interest. Investment programs are socially optimum. The government's budget is balanced. 相似文献
