This paper posits that significant changes in 19th century British recreational travel patterns resulted from a change in
the manner in which tourists used entertaining stimuli in order to attain pleasure. Consumers no longer merely viewed arousing
stimuli, but attempted to use them to produce emotional states of being which they could partially modify to intensify pleasurable
feelings (Damasio, Looking for Spinoza: Joy, sorrow, and the feeling brain, William Heinemann, 2003). The impetus for this modification stemmed from an increasing awareness that emotional responses could be to some degree
self-cultivated, as embodied in the Romantic ethos that become popular at the time via the emergence of the paperback novel
and magazine industry (Campbell, The romantic ethic and the spirit of modern consumerism, Blackwell, 1987). By learning how to manipulate and modify mental images in a way that may not necessarily correspond with objective reality,
Romantic tourists learned to elicit pleasure through engaging of their imagination. Such a change in the mode of pleasure

Social contractarians commonly take social contracts to be solely hypothetical and refrain from elaborating on the factors
that influence the feasibility of the formation of social contracts. In contrast, this paper aims at providing a discussion
of the conditions affecting the feasibility of social contracts. I argue that the more aligned the preferences of group members
for public goods are, the more the individuals share similar social norms, and the smaller the group is the more feasible
a genuine social contract becomes. I provide evidence in support of my contention from the medieval Hanseatic League. At the

Bank crises in emerging economies have been a feature of the recent global crisis, and their incidence has increased in the
post-Bretton Woods era. This paper investigates the impact of financial globalization on the incidence of systemic bank crises
in 20 emerging markets over the years 1976–2002 using measures of de facto and de jure financial openness. An increase in foreign debt liabilities contributes to an increase in the incidence of crises, but foreign
direct investment and portfolio equity liabilities have the opposite effect. A more liberal de jure capital regime lowers the incidence of banking crises, while a regime of fixed exchange rates increases their frequency.
The results of the econometric analysis is consistent with the experience of East European and central Asian emerging markets,
which attracted a relatively large proportion of capital flows in the form of debt in recent years and have been particularly

If the payoff obtained by the parties of an agreement depends on the values set for variables the value of which cannot be described precisely or monitored accurately, then the first best outcome may not be achieved. It is shown here that in some cases a second best long term agreement gives the parties a higher payoff, in other cases a short term arrangement is preferred. The interpretation of this result given in the paper is that when a long term contract is preferable, then firms are unable to commit themselves to it through a collusive agreement, and they will try to merge. Vice versa, no need to integrate arises when the preferred second best agreement is the short term one. Hospitality is one of the sectors that are nowadays most heavily characterized by consumers’ tendency to share online reviews on dedicated digital platforms. While most past work has focused on understanding the effect of online reviews and ratings on consumers’ evaluation and purchase decisions, this research tackles the issue of what drives the sharing of certain types of online content. Specifically, we investigate the sharing of user-generated content characterized by negative emotional valence, and study the effect of two factors on the extent to which user-generated content contains negative emotions. One such factor is reviewer's expertise, while the other is hotel quality. Our analysis of 1200 TripAdvisor reviews on Italian hotels located in three major Italian cities confirm our hypothesis that expert reviewers might share reviews containing less intense negative emotional content compared to less expert reviewers especially when the hotel is of high quality. To support our hypothesis, we build on the research on psychological antecedents of word-of-mouth behaviour suggesting that expert consumers are particularly reluctant to share negative word-of-mouth to avoid projecting a negative image of themselves in social contexts, thus possibly damaging their reputation. 相似文献

Previous studies have indicated that travel satisfaction - the experienced emotions during, and cognitive evaluation of, a trip - can be affected by travel mode choice and other trip characteristics. However, as satisfactory trips might improve a person's attitude towards the used mode, persons may be more likely to use that same mode for future trips of the same kind. Hence, a cyclical process between travel mode choice and travel satisfaction might occur. In this paper we begin to analyse this process—using a structural equation modelling approach on cross-sectional data—for people who engage in walking and cycling for leisure trips in the Belgian city of Ghent. The focus on walking and cycling reflects recent studies indicating that active travel is often associated with the highest levels of travel satisfaction. Results of this exploratory analysis offer tentative support for the idea of a cyclical process: the evaluation of walking and cycling trips positively affects the respondents' attitude towards the respective mode, which in turn has a positive effect on choosing that mode. 相似文献
