Impact of New Housing Construction on Racial Patterns

This paper inquires into the racial distribution impact of a projected significant increase in housing starts, under conditions of a federal fair housing law only now beginning to be effective and of an increase in the number of black families in the upper range of minority incomes. It examines the evidence within the broad context of changing urban forms and functions. The impact of new housing construction is analyzed under the headings of minority access to (1) new units and (2) filtered units in mover chains initiated by housing starts. Data are cited to support the conclusion that blacks' access to new units, while sharply increased over previous performance, will not have important effects on racial distribution, especially not increasing blacks as a proportion of suburban populations. Blacks' access to filtered housing, it is concluded, continues to be largely blocked by the dual racial market in real estate, except where such housing functions to extend the ghetto.     

Internet pharmaceutical sales: attributes, concerns, and future forecast

Internet pharmaceutical sales continue to skyrocket as healthcare providers and consumers are increasingly relying on the efficiencies and convenience that is available via such transactions. Managed care companies, increasing demands to reduce healthcare inefficiencies while maximizing the quality of patient care is a significant contributing factor to the expanding utilization and success of online pharmaceutical sales. However, with the expansion of Internet pharmaceutical sales, healthcare providers, pharmacy benefit management and insurance companies, and consumers realize new opportunities and risks. This paper will review the attributes and concerns associated with online pharmaceutical sales, discussing current and pending legislation intended to more effectively manage these parameters.     

Key issues in global supply base management

Developing effective business relationships with suppliers is hard work, especially when suppliers are located in different parts of the globe. Doing business with a supplier in China entails a very different set of fundamental elements than with one in the United States or Europe. As such, managers cannot rely on information systems to conduct business with global suppliers, but in many cases must travel to the location and visit with the supplier face to face to build an effective business relationship. In this article, 11 key issues that buying organizations should consider in their efforts to manage a global supply base are presented. These issues focus on the need for the “human factor” in establishing positive supplier relationships and the development of a high-performing global supply base.     

Organizational Diseconomies of scale

Private information creates a cost of operating a hierarchy, which becomes larger as the hierarchical distance between the information source and the decision maker increases. When information about a firm's capabilities is dispersed among the individuals in the firm, production is inefficient even though everyone behaves rationally. Because hierarchies need rents in order to function, a firm with a long hierarchy may not be viable in a competitive industry.

Perceptions of common helminth infections in a rural community

Common parasite infections cause energy depletion and growth stunting in children in endemic areas, and there is a suggestion that mental processes and school achievement are affected. The efficacy of control and treatment programmes, as with other development programmes, will depend to a great extent on the acceptance and support of people in affected areas. This study focused on the views of women who have young children in their care with the object of understanding their perceptions, and the implications these would have for intervention programmes.     

Broadband development in the European Union to 2012—A virtuous circle scenario

Along with many national governments, the European Commission has pushed broadband to the fore of social and economic policies in recent years. It has aligned broadband developments with furthering information society and knowledge economy developments.This paper presents a positive scenario for broadband-related developments in the European Union area from 2009 to 2012. The scenario, the iNetWorked Society, is one of four developed in an extensive multi-country project funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme.Before examining the scenario, however, the paper places into a critical perspective the EU's legacy of broadband policy to date. It highlights the limitations of technology-centred policy frames and broadband strategies, which privilege supply-side infrastructure and neglect demand-side issues of applications, uses and users. Such policy frames have been associated with great variations in the level of broadband rollout, take-up and use across Member States.The paper then outlines the socio- and macro-economic conditions that need to be in place in Europe for the positive scenario of the iNetworked Society to be realised. The iNetWorked Society comprises a plausible, internally consistent scenario for developments in a number of broadband-related areas: broadband adoption, e-business, e-work, e-government and digital content. It is based on a virtuous circle of technological, economic and socio-political developments, including strong economic growth, high broadband penetration, and high social engagement with ICTs.
