Market Demand and Income Distribution: a Theoretical Exploration

This paper sets out to explore theoretically how a change in the distribution of disposable income affects the market demand for a good or service. With the help of only minimal information on the shape of the Engel curve and the transition from one distribution to the other, a variety of empirically relevant constellations are identified in which the size (or mean income) effect on market demand is counteracted by the distributional effect. Since the determining factors are expressed by relations between summary statistics, the results at the same time provide theoretically sound restrictions on economic approaches to market demand analysis.

Differential Association, Multiple Normative Standards, and the Increasing Incidence of Corporate Deviance inan Era of Globalization

This paper examines with the use of aggregate data from the U.S. Department of Justicethe extent of contemporary white-collar crime as a consequence of multiple normative standards existing within corporations. Given the implications of globalization, the desire for increased profits, and the declining role of regulatory agencies across much of the world (save for Europe, Japan, Mexico and India), paper suggests that the incidence of corporate deviance is likely to increase in the foreseeable future.

The agreements setting up the new World Trade Organisation (WTO) which were signed in Marrakesh have met with widespread approval. The accompanying controversy over the question of social clauses has made the latter an issue of national and international importance which has since been under discussion in many international bodies, such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the OECD and the EU. The following two articles present differing views on this issue.
