Introducing Western-style HRM practices to China: Shopfloor perceptions in a British multinational 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The management of host country employees is often portrayed as a particularly fraught dimension for multinational firms. The problems involved are considered exponentially greater when there are substantial institutional differences and “cultural distance” between the host country and a multinational firm's parent country, as is assumed to be the case for Western firms operating in mainland China. Based upon detailed case study research conducted at a UK-invested firm in China between 1999 and 2003 and a comparative study of a Chinese state-owned firm, this paper explores the veracity of such assumptions. The findings indicate that Western human resource management (HRM) practices can be transplanted successfully and questions the degree to which foreign-invested enterprises (FIE) need to adopt “the Chinese way of doing things”. Indeed, such practices can be innovative in the Chinese context and provide a competitive source of differentiation for multinationals as employees. 相似文献

This paper examines whether there is a long‐run stable equilibrium relationship between advertising and sales across the market segments of the UK car industry over the period 1971–2001. In order to achieve this goal, we allow for structural breaks in the series using cointegration techniques. The results show the existence of long‐run equilibrium relationships in all six market segments, although in four of them the relationship is not stable. In general, one structural change is detected in the late 1970s and another in the early 1990s, coinciding with two economic recessions. When we do not account for structural changes, the estimated long‐run elasticities of advertising on sales are seen to be substantially downwardly biased. Finally, a noticeable increase is observed in long‐run elasticities in most car market segments during the nineties with respect to previous decades. 相似文献

Within the framework of the European Community's policy response to the risks of global climate change, the Commission is analyzing the options for using a mixed energy and CO2 tax as one policy instrument in a package of measures. The taxes planned to cut CO2 emissions are designed as a production tax on energy products, based on their fuel content or, in the case of a CO2 tax, on the CO2 content. Although the precise tax rate has not yet been confirmed, that of US$10 per barrel seems to be the most probable. Against this background, the aim of the study is to investigate, on the basis of the input–output model, the effects of both a general energy and a CO2 tax on the producer prices of the different economic sectors in Spain as a case-study. Additionally, the paper attempts to shed some light on other related issues, such as the evaluation of the effects of energy and CO2 taxes on domestic goods' competitiveness with respect to other non-Community countries. 相似文献

Strategic technology partnering between firms has become a growing subject of interest to both companies experimenting with this mode of economic organization and researchers from a wide variety of academic disciplines. In this study an effort is made to measure the effect of strategic technology partnering on companies engaged in such joint efforts. This paper shows that state contingent debt can be synthetically constructed using non-contingent debt of different maturities. A main policy implication of this principle is that the Ramsey allocation with complete markets can be sustained with non-contingent debt only by properly managing its maturity structure. The numerical experiments, however, suggest that this policy implication ought to be taken with care. We find that the debt positions that sustain the Ramsey allocation are very high (on the order of a few hundred times total GDP for a very simple four state economy) and increasing in the number of states. Since the work of Little and Rubin (1987) not substantial advances in the analysisof explanatory regression models for incomplete data with missing not at randomhave been achieved, mainly due to the difficulty of verifying the randomness ofthe unknown data. In practice, the analysis of nonrandom missing data is donewith techniques designed for datasets with random or completely random missingdata, as complete case analysis, mean imputation, regression imputation, maximumlikelihood or multiple imputation. However, the data conditions required to minimizethe bias derived from an incorrect analysis have not been fully determined. In thepresent work, several Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to establishthe best strategy of analysis for random missing data applicable in datasets withnonrandom missing data. The factors involved in simulations are sample size,percentage of missing data, predictive power of the imputation model and existenceof interaction between predictors. The results show that the smallest bias is obtainedwith maximum likelihood and multiple imputation techniques, although with lowpercentages of missing data, absence of interaction and high predictive power ofthe imputation model (frequent data structures in research on child and adolescentpsychopathology) acceptable results are obtained with the simplest regression imputation. 相似文献

This paper presents a non-median voter model of redistribution in which greater inequality leads to lower redistribution. Bargaining between interest groups and politicians over exemptions implies that individuals with sufficiently high income will not pay taxes in equilibrium. Therefore, voters will set tax rates low enough so as to control the incentives for rent-seeking. An increase in inequality, by putting more income in the hands of individuals that can buy exemptions, will lead to lower equilibrium redistribution. The model can be used to account for a negative relationship between inequality and growth and provides a new explanation of why the poor do not expropriate the rich in democracies. 相似文献

What determines the resources allocated to an HR department? The antecedents of the size of HR departments within firms and the relationship between HR department size and the role that HR departments perform are issues of theoretical and practical importance. Using large‐scale survey data from organizations in Europe and Japan, this article explores the influence of nationality, size, and sector on the comparative ratio of HR specialists in organizations, and on the likely scope and brief of such departments. It also examines the internal organizational characteristics associated with HR department size.
