Deutsches Gesundheitssystem teuer und ineffizient — eine Fehldiagnose?

In Deutschland wird ein international überdurchschnittlicher Anteil des Bruttoinlandsprodukts für Gesundheitsleistungen aufgewendet. Gleichzeitig ist die Lebenserwartung der Deutschen im Vergleich der entwickelten L?nder allenfalls durchschnittlich. Aus dieser Diskrepanz wird oft der Schluss gezogen, das deutsche Gesundheitssystem sei ineffizient. Bei n?herer Analyse der zugrundeliegenden Daten erscheint diese Schlussfolgerung jedoch fragwürdig.     

Market Integration,Choice of Technology,and Welfare

This paper develops an international trade model where firms in a duopoly may diversify their technologies for strategic reasons. The firms face the same set of technologies given by a tradeoff between marginal costs and fixed costs, but depending on trade costs firms may choose different technologies. Market integration may induce a technological restructuring where firms either diversify their technologies or switch to a homogeneous technology. In general, market integration improves welfare. However, a small decrease of trade costs which induces a switch from heterogeneous technologies to a homogeneous technology may locally reduce global welfare. The model also shows that productivity differences lead to intra‐industry firm heterogeneity in size and exports similar to the “new–new” trade models with monopolistic competition.

On the different “worlds” of intra-organizational knowledge management: Understanding idiosyncratic variation in MNC cross-site knowledge-sharing practices

This qualitative field study investigated cross-site knowledge sharing in a small sample of multinational corporations in three different MNC business contexts (global, multidomestic, transnational). The results disclose heterogeneous “worlds” of MNC knowledge sharing, ultimately raising the question as to whether the whole concept of MNC knowledge sharing covers a sufficiently unitary phenomenon to be meaningful. We derive a non-exhaustive typology of MNC knowledge-sharing practices: self-organizing knowledge sharing, technocratic knowledge sharing, and best practice knowledge sharing. Despite its limitations, this typology helps to elucidate a number of issues, including the latent conflict between two disparate theories of MNC knowledge sharing, namely “sender–receiver” and “social learning” theories (Noorderhaven & Harzing, 2009). More generally, we develop the term “knowledge contextualization” to highlight the way that firm-specific organizational features pre-define which knowledge is considered to be of special relevance for intra-organizational sharing.

Market entry of multinational companies in markets at the bottom of the pyramid: A learning perspective

Multinational companies (MNCs) can play an important role in poverty alleviation. The international business literature, however, lacks theoretical insight and systematic empirical evidence of MNCs entering low-income markets. Therefore, this study sheds light on the questions: How MNCs enter low-income markets? How MNCs operate? And how they gain knowledge in these markets? Using a multiple case study approach, we analyze MNCs with business activities in low-income markets by taking recourse to the internationalization process model of Johanson and Vahlne. The results reveal that companies develop knowledge by enlarging their mode of market commitment to a new level that exceeds local manufacturing and production facilities.
