Aiding Agricultural Development — Some Lessons1

The indivisibility of Canada's national and international political and economic interests is recognized. These interests can be furthered only if the interdependence of economic, social and political considerations are expressed through clear cut national policy goals for integrating rural and urban interests. These goals in themselves are meaningless without the requisite government authority backed up by resources and personnel for the implementation process. An integral part of implementation is the need to ensure participation of the resident population in development goal setting and implementation of programs. Current international experience supporting the need for local residents to be so involved are presented. Ces intérêts peuvent être favoriser seulement si l'interdépendance des considérations économiques, sociales et politiques sont exprimées à trovers une politique nationals précise afin d'intégrer les intérêts rurals et urbains. Ces ambitions sont en eux-mêmes sans signification, sans l'autoritée gouvernementale secondée par les ressources et le personnel pour un meilleur développement. Une partie intégrante de ce développement sera le besoin d'assurer la participation de la population résidante dans un cadre de croissance. Les expériences courantes, supportant le besoin des résidents locaux àêtre engager, sont présentées.     

The present and future use of ‘land’ below ground

The world's subsurface space, including Britain's, is already used in a variety of ways, ranging from occupancy to disposal and the bulk storage of materials and fuels. In the future it is likely that it will be put to further use in response to trends in technology, resource supply and demand, socioeconomics and geopolitics. Here the present and future uses of underground space, and the potential planning and social issues affecting its development, are reviewed. Future uses are likely to be in the area of increasing occupancy (both commercial and residential), the secure storage of documents and data, the storage of carbon dioxide for carbon abatement, natural gas, compressed air stores of energy from traditional and renewable sources, the use of underground heat in buildings and the proposed deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. The article will also explore pressure points and challenges. These will include the regulation of multiple uses of subsurface storage space and, for projects of national importance including natural gas and radioactive waste storage, legislation to lessen the effect of local opposition relative to the ‘national need’. This article does not discuss future mining, hydrocarbon extraction, or water resources.     

‘It Doesn't Matter How Big or Small You Are…There's a Position For You’: Body Image Among Female Tackle Football Players

The purpose of this study was explore the body image experiences of women who play tackle football. Data included semi-structured interviews with 15 players on a women's tackle football team in Western Canada. Data were analyzed thematically and objectification theory was used to interpret the findings. Themes that emerged included: a) improved body image through physical change, appreciation of function over appearance and shifting ideals of beauty; b) importance of a social atmosphere that celebrated diverse bodies; and c) negotiation of body image on and off the field. Research has documented a connection between body image and physically active leisure, but much about the nature of the relationship is still unclear. The findings of this study provide insight into elements of physically active leisure (e.g., social atmosphere or nature of the activity) which can be used to promote positive body image, health, and wellness in leisure settings.     

Small business economics

The paper presents an overview of small-business economics. Small businesses are shown to comprise a substantial and expanding segment of the U.S. economy. The role of small businesses in the economy is considered from the standpoint of various economic theories of the size distribution of firms. Firm-size related empirical regularities are reviewed and their implications for economic theory is discussed. Several small-business policy issues are discussed, including the role of small businesses in labor, macroeconomic, and regulatory policies, along with a review of research on small-business economics that might help guide these policies.We wish to thank Zoltan J. A point optimal test for heteroscedastic disturbances

A new test for additive heteroscedasticity in the disturbances of the linear regression model is proposed. Power functions of various forms of the new test are compared empirically with those of currently favoured tests for a range of heteroscedastic models. The results highlight the power advantage of a test which is MP1 at a central point in the alternative hypothesis parameter space. The main conclusion is that the recommended version of the new test is generally more powerful than existing tests against medium and severe heteroscedasticity, whereas the King and Szroeter tests perform better against weak heteroscedasticity.
