Correlation is often used to assess both independence and linearity in two dimensions, but is not well understood in higher dimensions. Here we take a closer look at these uses of correlation in two dimensions and how these assessments might be extended to higher dimensions. This paper develops a methodology to estimate the environmental impact of the Uruguay Round trade agreement. The impact is estimated in terms of five air pollutants for both developed and developing countries/regions. The methodology estimates environmental Kuznets curves and uses these in conjunction with FranÇois et al.'s (1995) estimates of Uruguay Round income gains and sectoral production changes, together with sectoral pollution intensities from Hettige et al. (1994). In this manner, composition, scale and technique effects of the Uruguay Round on air pollution are estimated. The monetary cost/benefit associated with the pollution changes is also estimated. Results indicate that emissions of all five pollutants are predicted to increase in developing and transition regions as a result of the Uruguay Round, whilst in developed regions emissions of three pollutants decrease and two increase. The results also suggest that the environmental impact will be considerably greater if the Uruguay Round affects the rate of economic growth. 相似文献

Abstract This paper examines the use of aggregate measures of support (AMSs) in the proposals for the long‐term reform of agricultural support tabled by the major participants in the Uruguay Round. The USA, the Cairns Group (CG) and the EC have proposed measures based on the OECD's Producer Subsidy Equivalent (PSE), adjusted to take account of only the most trade‐distorting policies, and using a fixed reference price to calculate the extent of market price support. If the proposed ‘adjusted PSEs’ are used, the reductions in internal support levels in the EC cereals sector from the base periods to 1995 range from 8 billion ECU under the US proposal to 4.5 billion ECU under the EC proposal. The resulting ‘producer prices’ would be almost 20% higher under the EC proposal than under the other two. In terms of percentage PSEs, support to farmers would be around 20 to 25 percentage points below present levels under the US and CG proposals and around 18 percentage points lower under the EC's plan. 相似文献

In this article, we examine the dynamics of trust in the triadic relationship between HR, employees and managers when dealing with allegations of workplace bullying. Previous research has shown employees to be dissatisfied with HR practitioners' responses to complaints of workplace bullying, and we explore the novel angle of the HR practitioners' perspective through semistructured interviews. Paralleling extant employee accounts, the findings suggest that HR practitioners rarely judge situations as bullying where a manager is accused. Trust between employee, manager and HR practitioner is essential for the successful resolution of bullying claims, yet this study suggests multiple directions of distrust. By virtue of their role alignment and previous experiences of handling bullying, HR practitioners were found to prioritise their relationships with managers, automatically distrusting employees' bullying claims. Despite also distrusting managers to effectively deliver HRM practices, it appears that bullying complaints are ‘too hot to handle’ for HR practitioners given the risks to their relationships with managers. 相似文献

This paper traces the progress of the agricultural negotiations in the current GATT round from the Ministerial Declaration at Punte del Este, Uruguay, in September 1986 to the Geneva ‘Accord’ in April 1989. It summarises the initial position papers of the major participants, discusses the impasse at the Mid-Term Review (Montreal, December 1988) and relates the Geneva Accord to the groundwork laid down in the preceding negotiations.
