The international oil industry in the 1980s

Few industries have undergone such rapid changes during the last ten years as the international oil industry. During this decade, there have been radical changes in the conditions under which international oil companies acquire and trade crude oil. In addition to the changes in the upstream sector the two quantum jumps in oil prices have drastically altered the conditions of downstream operations. Since 1979 oil demand fell more sharply than total energy demand, thereby reducing its relative importance in the energy economy. These events initiated a far-reaching adjustment process which is likely to continue.

Using Computer-Based Simulation Exercises to Teach Business Ethics

This paper discusses how to introduce ethical dilemmas into computer-based business simulation exercise to teach business ethics. Simulations have an inherent advantage over other pedagogies for teaching ethics because simulations provide students with both an intellectual and a behavioral exposure to the topic. Issues addressed include considerations before writing ethical dilemmas, the writing of ethical dilemmas, and process issues for introducing ethical dilemmas. An example is developed and discussed. Through the process described, instructors can better prepare students for a lifetime of tough business decisions.

Mit Hilfe der vorgestellten Vorgehensweisen wird sowohl dem Eigenschutz des Versicherungsunternehmens als auch dem Schutz der Versicherungsgemeinschaft Rechnung getragen.     

Patterns of abnormal returns and the competitive effects of horizontal mergers

This paper examines the abnormal stock returns of rivals of firms undertaking horizontal mergers that were challenged by the FTC over the period 1981–1987. At the time of merger announcements, the rivals earn positive abnormal return on average; at the time of the antitrust complaints, the rivals earn normal returns. Past studies have argued that this specific pattern of abnormal returns necessarily indicates that mergers could not have reduced competition. This paper finds that this pattern of abnormal returns is a result of the different effects of antitrust complaints on smaller and larger rivals. The evidence suggests that the mergers may have created efficiencies, but the pattern of abnormal returns is not inconsistent with mergers that may also have resulted in higher product prices.     

Can the international debt strategy use the concept of corporate compositions?

So far, it has been possible to stave off really serious consequences for the world economy and the international financial system since the developing-country debt crisis started in 1982. Yet for many developing countries, external debt problems and the underlying economic crisis are as pressing as ever. The following article identifies five central elements of a general orientation framework for dealing with the debt crisis which has been inspired by the basic idea of the concept of corporate compositions found in commercial law.     

Technological Creativity and Cheap Labour? Explaining the Growing International Competitiveness of German Mechanical Engineering before World War I

Abstract. Which factors caused the growing international competitiveness of German mechanical engineering industry in the pre‐World War I period? In this paper, we want to address this question and elucidate whether or not the international market success of machine builders in the German Empire was determined by technological creativity and the availability of a comparatively cheap labour force. Based on an unbalanced panel, we therefore investigate the influence of demand, labour costs and technological creativity on export performance of 32 different machinery types. We find robust evidence that the development of export–import ratios in mechanical engineering was positively influenced by the growth of patent stocks that represent the new knowledge being available for German machine builders. In addition, we present some evidence for the assumption that the growing international competitiveness of German mechanical engineering was also caused by decreasing relative unit labour cost.     

The macro- and microeconomic social impact of advanced computer technology

The impact of advanced computer technologies on relationships between headquarters and affiliates in management, employment, work environment as well as the economic role of women and the economies of LDCs is investigated in this essay. Computers and information technologies under control of transnational corporations which try to gain competitive advantages, tend to provide concentration of power in head-quarters. They increase the rate of unemployment, alienate employees from their work environment, reinforce traditional economic and social roles of women and widen the gap between developed countries and LDCs. Strategies need to be evolved to enable all human beings to participate in the benefits of the new technologies.
