The EU and Turkey—Economic Effects of Turkey’s Full Membership

Since October 2005 the EU and Turkey have been negotiating the accession of Turkey to the EU. In June 2006 they reached agreement on the provisional closure of the “science and research” chapter, a matter which was relatively easy to handle. Thirty-four chapters remain to be negotiated, indicating that the path to Turkey’s full membership will be a long one. What are the main economic challenges facing both Turkey and the EU?

Core and Walrasian equilibria when agents' characteristics are extremely dispersed

Summary. It is shown that core-Walras equivalence fails whenever the commodity space is a non-separable Banach space. The interpretation is that a large number of agents guarantees core-Walras equivalence only if there is actually a large number of agents relative to the size of the commodity space. Otherwise a large number of agents means that agents' characteristics may be extremely dispersed, so that the standard theory of perfect competition fails. Supplementing the core-Walras non-equivalence result, it is shown that in the framework of economies with weakly compact consumption sets – as developed by Khan and Yannelis (1991) – the core is always non-empty, even if consumption sets are non-separable. The analysis of unbalanced linear models with variance components

Statistical inference for fixed effects, random effects and components of variance in an unbalanced linear model with variance components will be discussed. Variance components will be estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood. Iterative procedures for computing the estimates, such as Fisher scoring and the EM-algorithm, are described.     

Delay in contests

Why is there delay in contests? In this paper, we follow and extend the line of reasoning of Carl von Clausewitz to explain delay. For a given contest technology, delay may occur if there is an asymmetry between defense and attack, if the expected change in relative strengths is moderate, and if the additional cost of investment in future strength is low.
