In the last 50 years, population and incomes have increased steadily throughout much of the Sunbelt. This paper assesses the relative contributions of rising productivity, rising demand for Southern amenities, and increases in housing supply to the growth of warm areas, using data on income, housing price, and population growth. Before 1980, economic productivity increased significantly in warmer areas and drove the population growth in those places. Since 1980, productivity growth has been more modest, but housing supply growth has been enormous. We infer that new construction in warm regions represents a growth in supply, rather than demand, from the fact that prices are generally falling relative to the rest of the country. The relatively slow pace of housing price growth in the Sunbelt, relative to the rest of the country and relative to income growth, also implies that there has been no increase in the willingness to pay for sun-related amenities. As such, it seems that the growth of the Sunbelt has little to do with the sun.  相似文献

The nuclear accident in Japan in March 2011 was an extreme event and studies of its consequences can offer new insights into long-term effects on society. This study of societal consequences in November 2012 is a follow-up of a previous study of the most important consequences a year earlier. At twenty months after the accident, the radioactive contamination and ensuing need for decontamination still dominates since reconstruction and return of evacuees cannot begin until an area has been decontaminated. Health concerns remain, although extensive screening is under way, and the results so far indicate that the risks for negative effects are low. The costs to society of these and other consequences of the nuclear accident are huge and will continue to grow. The future consequences related to the radioactive substances released in 2011 will develop as a function of the relatively long half-life of cesium-137 (ca. 30 years) and the perception of the situation guiding human and organisational behaviour. Temporal and spatial scales are noticeable in how the consequences have developed. A systems perspective also appears to be valid. These observations are used to explore the definition of resilience by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. This showed that the definition can apply to an extreme disaster, that it constructs resilience as a graded property and that it encompasses both proactive and reactive resilience. However, the underpinning abilities to resist, absorb, accommodate and recover as well as their internal relations need further exploration and discussion. The discussion here shows that examining resilience in relation to a real event can be fruitful for understanding the concept and its definition.  相似文献

Abstract

Aims: To assess the real-world clinical burden and healthcare resource utilization (HRU) among patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism, overall and by adequately controlled (AC) vs not adequately controlled (NAC) disease, informed by guideline-recommended clinical management targets, including biochemistry and symptoms.

Materials and methods: In this retrospective online chart review, endocrinologists in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain were randomly selected to review the medical charts of adult patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism receiving calcium and activated vitamin D. Patients’ demographics, disease characteristics, symptoms, comorbidities, and hypoparathyroidism-related HRU during the 1 year before the review date were assessed. Clinical burden and HRU were compared between patients with NAC and AC hypoparathyroidism.

Results: Of 614 patients with hypoparathyroidism (AC, N?=?442; NAC, N?=?172), the mean age was 43.6?years, and the majority were female (61.6%), Caucasian (78.8%), and had post-surgical hypoparathyroidism (74.4%). Mean duration of hypoparathyroidism was 46.0?months. Hypoparathyroidism-related symptoms and comorbidities were reported in 59.4% and 46.7% of patients, respectively; 90.7% of patients had ≥1 hypoparathyroidism-related HRU event. More patients with NAC (57.6%) vs AC (42.5%) hypoparathyroidism experienced ≥1 comorbidity including calcium/phosphate imbalances, and brain, cardiovascular, metabolic, and renal disorders (all p?<?0.01). More patients with NAC vs AC hypoparathyroidism incurred ≥1 hypoparathyroidism-related hospitalization (27.9% vs 16.3%) and emergency room visits (47.7% vs 38.5%), and patients with NAC vs AC hypoparathyroidism had a higher number of outpatient visits (3.6 vs 2.6; all p?<?0.05), in the 1-year observation period.

Limitations and conclusions: Limitations of this online chart review include possible under-estimation of disease burden, limited sample size, and the inability to rule out selection bias. Findings indicate that patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism experience substantial symptomatic and comorbid burdens resulting in frequent HRU, suggesting an unmet need, particularly in NAC disease.  相似文献

The recent popularity of write-offs allows for examination of the role governance plays in the write-off decision. I find that well governed companies are more likely to announce write-offs. Additionally, better governed firms announce smaller write-offs relative to poorly governed firms. The evidence also indicates that the stocks of well governed firms experience announcement abnormal returns that are over six percent higher than those of poorly governed firms. The results suggest better governed firms take a pro-active approach to reveal bad news early, and thereby mitigate further uncertainty for investors.  相似文献

Global careers, typically defined as involving multiple international relocations including various positions and assignments in several countries, have recently received increasing research attention. This interest is driven by a growing corporate need for managers who are able to deal with global integration and co-ordination in large multinational corporations. An important aspect of the competency of a global manager is his or her social capital, i.e. the network relationships he or she possesses. However, while the concept of social capital has been widely used in a number of research fields recently, it has received relatively little attention thus far in the IHRM context. This paper contributes to this research gap, and seeks to answer the empirical research question of how multiple international relocations affect the social capital of a manager. Our qualitative interviews of 20 Finnish MNC managers with global careers identified that such careers represent a ‘social capital paradox’. Global careers are characterized by a broad and diverse network of both internal and external ties. This breadth and diversity relate to (1) the managers' internal contact networks of weak ties (2) their internal support networks of strong ties and (3) their external networks of both strong and weak ties. These typical characteristics represent three major social capital paradoxes in the sense that they carry both significant social–capital-related benefits as well as potential risks.  相似文献

The EU‐wide survey “Statistics on Income and Living Conditions” (EU‐SILC) is extremely important for international social science research and policy advice. It is therefore crucial to ensure that the data are of the highest quality and international comparability. This paper is aimed at identifying unexpected developments in income levels, income mobility, and inequality in the EU‐SILC data between 2005 and 2009. We examine the consistency of EU‐SILC by comparing cross‐sectional results with findings based on two‐year longitudinal samples. Although the data represent similar populations, for several countries the results of this comparison differ widely. One important outcome is the high degree of variability over time in countries that obtain their income information from register data. This suggests methodological challenges in the clear designation of new subsample members, in the reweighting of the data, in imputation of missing values, and in other areas.  相似文献

A conceptual framework for perceived value of online banking services is developed. The nature of four value dimensions is explored in the context of online banking services. In two empirical studies the relative importance of each value dimension is measured and the findings indicate that the temporal and spatial dimensions are perceived as more important than traditional dimensions based on outcome and process elements. Sub-dimensions of technical, functional, temporal, and spatial service value are also identified. It is suggested that temporal and spatial flexibility is only one aspect of temporal and spatial value. The paper extends prior research on e-services by conceptualising online banking service value as a multidimensional and hierarchical construct and separating each value dimension into sub-dimensions. It suggests a holistic perspective of service value and a dynamic nature of value dimensions: although the separate value dimensions involve different aspects of the service value, as a whole they fulfil the same need. The paper contributes to marketing research and practice with its approach to how value can be conceptualised for bank services. Explanations for the dynamics of the value dimensions are proposed.  相似文献
