Education and growth with endogenous debt constraints

When future human capital cannot be alienated, households are allowed to borrow up to the point where it is in their own interest not to default. In such a framework, endogenous borrowing limits arise as the outcome of individual rationality constraint. In a model where education is the engine of growth, we show that endogenous borrowing constraints imply global indeterminacy. Comparing outcomes across the various equilibria we show that the relation between growth and yields is hump-shaped. Maximum growth can arise in an equilibrium with binding borrowing constraints, specially if the elasticity of human capital to education spending is large. Deepening financial markets promotes long-run growth in the case of a poverty trap, but not necessarily otherwise. On the methodological side, our approach stresses the importance of studying borrowing limits in general equilibrium, not only in small open economies. Philippe Michel passed away on July 22, 2004. TRADE AND FINANCIAL FLOWS IN A WORLD ACCOUNTING FRAMEWORK: A BALANCED WAM FOR 1990

How accurately do we measure the external deficit of the U.S. or the surplus of Japan? If checked at the global level, statistics on international trade and finance show large discrepancies. Such global statistical discrepancies hamper the analysis and understanding of world economic developments. An accounting framework—labelled World Accounting Matrix (WAM)—is proposed to cross-check the statistical consistency of commodity flows, international payments and internal balances across countries. The framework is applied to data for 1990. To obtain global consistency, substantial adjustments had to be made to the estimates of the external balances of the U.S. and Japan. The implications for global modelling work are potentially vast.

Het is verboden een persoon beneden zestien jaren of eene vrouw op Zondag arbeid le doen verrichten in fabrieken en werkplaatsen.Voor personen, behoorende tot een kerkgenootschap, dat den wekelijkschen rustdog niet op Zondag viert, treedt in de plaats van dit verbod dat om hen arbeid te doen verrichten in fabrieken en werkplaatsen in het etmaal, door hun kerkgenoolschap als wekelijksche rustday aangenomen, indien zij aan het hoofd of den besluurder van het bedrijf of de onderneming hun verlangen hebben te kennen gegeven om in dat etmaal geen arbeid te verrichten, waarvan achter hunnen naam op de in art.11 bedoelde lijst melding moet worden gemaakt.Voor bepaalde bedrijven kan door Ons bij de algemeene maatregelen van bostuur, bedoeld in het tweede lid van art.5, worden vergund den arbeid van mannelijke personen tusschen veertien en zestien jaren op Zondag te doen voortduren tot niterlijk te6 uren des voormiddags.Waar in eene fabriek tot herstel of reiniging van eenen aldaar in gebruik zijnden stoomketel de arbeid van een mannelijken persoon beneden zestien jaren onontbeerlijk mocht zijn, kan de burgemeester der gemeente waar de fabriek gelegen is daartoe schriftelijke vergunning voor eenen bepaalden Zondag verleenen.

Designing minimum-cost recycling collection networks with required throughput

The problem of designing minimum-cost recycling networks with required throughput is a subset of the broader class of facility location problems in which the recycler wishes to determine the optimal number and location of receiving centers as well as the correct financial incentive to be offered in order to stimulate collection of used or unrecoverable products to a degree required for regulatory reasons or otherwise. This paper presents a conceptual framework, an analytical model, and a three-stage algorithmic solution for this problem. An illustrative case study in the recycling of unrecoverable tires in southern states of Brazil is presented.
