Chichilnisky’s criterion for sustainability has the merit to be, so far, the unique explicit, complete and continuous social
welfare criterion that combines successfully the requirement of efficiency with an instrumental notion of intergenerational
equity (no dictatorship of the present and no dictatorship of the future). But it has one drawback: when applied in the context
of renewable resources, and with a constant discount factor, there exists no exploitation path that maximizes this criterion.
The present article suggests a way to cope with this problem. The idea is to restrict attention to the set of convex combinations
between the optimal discounted utilitarian program and the stationary program leading to the green golden rule. It is shown
that an optimal path in this set exists under rather weak sufficient conditions on the fundamentals of the problem. Some ethical
properties of this approach are also discussed. In some cases, it turns out that the restricted solution implies no loss of
efficiency and benefits intermediate and infinitely distant generations. 相似文献

This study presents important international evidence by examining the determinants of debt maturity of listed firms in Singapore, a major financial center in Asia. We focus on bank debt because it is the principal source of financing for most Singapore firms. We find that consistent with the contracting-cost hypothesis, firms with greater growth opportunities rely more heavily on short-term bank debt whereas larger firms are more likely to use long-term bank debt. In contrast, we find no strong support for either the tax or signaling hypotheses. 相似文献

Survey findings based on a national sample of CEOs and human resource managers indicate that over 50% of organizations have experienced moderate to great difficulty attracting and retaining women managers and professionals. Respondents perceived that the most serious career problems encountered by women revolve around organizational politics, career development opportunities, and family conflicts. Existing and needed human resource management policies in response to these problems are reported. A series of additional analyses highlight differences across industries, and according to company size and stage in the corporate life cycle. Based on survey findings, recommendations are discussed for human resource management practitioners concerned with increasing their companies' abilities to actively compete for and retain women managers. 相似文献

Much of the research on management compensation focuses on the level and structure of executives’ pay. In this study, we examine
a compensation element that has not received so far considerable research attention—the dispersion of compensation across managers—and its impact on firm performance. We examine the implications of two theoretical models
dealing with pay dispersion—tournament versus equity fairness. Tournament theory stipulates that a large pay dispersion provides
strong incentives to highly qualified managers, leading to higher efforts and improved enterprise performance, while arguments
for equity fairness suggest that greater pay dispersion increases envy and dysfunctional behavior among team members, adversely
affecting performance. Consistent with tournament theory, we find that firm performance, measured by either Tobin’s Q or stock performance, is positively associated with the dispersion of management compensation. We also document that the
positive association between firm performance and pay dispersion is stronger in firms with high agency costs related to managerial
discretion. Furthermore, effective corporate governance, especially high board independence, strengthens the positive association
between firm performance and pay dispersion. Our findings thus add to the compensation literature a potentially important
dimension: managerial pay dispersion.

Family carers are often involved in decisions concerning the health and social care needs of people with dementia. These decisions frequently involve considering risks inherent in daily living situations and discussing these with care recipients and professionals. The purpose of this study is to understand the risks that present most concern to family carers; explore attitudes and approaches of this group towards risk; and examine how information about risks is shared between familial carers, care recipients and professionals working in dementia care. Five focus groups were held across Northern Ireland between April and July 2015 involving 22 carers. Risks of most concern were driving, falls, financial risks, getting lost and using electrical appliances. Concepts of ‘risk’ related to terms such as danger, harm and vulnerability with emphasis on consequences rather than likelihoods. The psychosocial benefits of taking risk were recognised by some participants. Discussion of risks with family members with dementia primarily involved bringing risk matters to the attention of the individual. Family carers talked with a wide range of professionals about risks. Divergences in perspectives were noted, particularly in relation to matters of health and safety. A model of risk communication is developed illustrating how this can play a key role in informed, shared decision-making where a family member has dementia, serving an important role in risk management processes in informal community dementia care. 相似文献

In the framework where the channel of international transmission of technology is trade in intermediate inputs, this paper investigates the role of heterogeneities across countries. In particular, this paper analyzes how cross-country differences in production structure, national innovative capacity, and absorptive capacity affect the scope and magnitude of international R&D spillovers on productivity. The study is based on the industry-level data set that covers eight OECD countries from 1970 to 1995. It finds that accounting for cross-country differences in each of production structure (using country-specific input–output relations) and national innovative capacity (using patents granted per R&D investment) yields significantly different spillover effects than previous studies. This suggests that the effect of international R&D spillovers depends on both production structure and the pattern of international trade. Further, it finds the absorptive capacity of a country is positively related to spillovers. 相似文献

Past research has suggested that a number of travel package attributes impact on people's choices. In the present study the impacts of a number of these elements (price, package characteristics, travel agents and a seal of approval) in online and off‐line environments were examined using conjoint analysis. It was found that price had the biggest impact, although travel agent and airline reputation and trustworthiness also impacted on people's preferences. Using a large sample of US data, we examine the relation between trade credit and cost behaviour and further investigate the moderating effects on this relation of agency problem, product market competition, and customer concentration. We find that firms using high levels of trade credit exhibit lower cost stickiness and this is prevalent in the high agency problem sub‐sample. In addition, in a non‐competitive market, where the agency problem arises owing to lack of competition, trade credit plays an external monitoring role by attenuating cost stickiness. A study was done examining the impact of toy-based television programs and program-related toys on children. One hundred and ten first- and second-grade children participated in an experiment which focused on imaginative play. The results indicated that, in general, the combination of watching a toy-based cartoon, followed by playing with a set of cartoon-related toys, produced stories that were more imitative of the immediately preceding experience, whereas watching the cartoon alone or playing with the cartoon-related toys alone led to more imaginative productions from other sources. However, for certain aspects of imagination at a more advanced cognitive level, the cartoon, especially when combined with cartoon-related toys, actually stimulated the imaginative processes of the younger children, thus serving as a learning tool at a transitional stage of cognitive development. 相似文献
