Codes of Practice and Ethics in the UK Communications Industry

The media, advertising and public relations are all regulated in some degree by ethical codes of practice, but do they work and do they help practitioners? The author is Senior Lecturer in public relations and philosophy at Leeds Business School, Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds LS2 8AF. She is currently preparing material for a new MA in Business Policy and Ethics, to be offered jointly by Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Leeds.     

Weaker MSE criteria and tests for linear restrictions in regression models with non-spherical disturbances

This paper extend, in an asymptotic sense, the strong and the weaker mean square error criteria and corresponding tests to linear models with non-spherical disturbances where the error covariance matrix is unknown but a consistent estimator for it is available. The mean square error tests of Toro-Vizcorrondo and Wallace (1968) and Wallace (1972) test for the superiority of restricted over unrestricted linear estimators in a least squares context. This generalization of these tests makes them available for use with GLS, Zellner's SUR, 2SLS, 3SLS, tests of over identification, and so forth.     

Revenue growth in not-for-profit organisations: The effects of interactive and diagnostic controls and organisational culture

Using survey and archival data for 180 not-for-profit aged care organisations, we find that interactive use of performance measurement systems positively affects the organisations’ revenue growth, while the diagnostic use negatively affects revenue growth. We also find that organisational culture, specifically attention to detail, innovation and respect for people, moderates these effects. Our findings have implications for the literature in terms of understanding the combinatorial effects of formal management control and culture on organisational performance. The findings also have practical implications for designing performance measurement systems and developing organisational cultures, to create an internal environment effective in enabling revenue growth.     

Ordering,revenue and anchoring in art auctions

We estimate the effect of ordering by value on revenues in sequential art auctions held by Sotheby's and Christie's. We exploit a pre determined rotation of which of these two houses holds their auction first during auction week in New York City. When the house that goes first has relatively expensive paintings compared to the other house, we find that the sale premium for the week is around 21% higher relative to the mean sale premium, and the fraction of paintings sold during the week is around 11% higher. We provide evidence that this is due to an anchoring effect.
