Investigating undergraduate business internships: Do supervisor and self-evaluations differ?

The authors analyze consistency between supervisors' and interns' self-evaluations based on interns' gender, time of completion (summer or academic year), and sponsor (on-campus department or off campus). Students, in general, tended to have lower ratings for computer skills, relative to supervisors, suggesting that they do not appreciate the skills that they possess. When student self-evaluations differed from those of supervisors, women gave themselves lower ratings than supervisors, whereas the opposite was seen for men. When evaluations differed, students completing on-campus internships tended to rate themselves higher than their supervisors, whereas the opposite was seen for students completing off-campus internships. Suggestions for better advising and preparing students, in advance of completing internships, are provided.     

Seeing a new side to seasides: culturally regenerating the English seaside town

The ‘buzzword’ for the 1990s was undoubtedly the concept of sustainability in all its various manifestations, not least in the field of tourism development. Its successor for the 2000s looks set to become the phenomenon of cultural regeneration, which is already dominating the urban landscape of much of western Europe. However, the extent to which regeneration through cultural development and the revival of tourism can become the new panacea for declining resorts is open to debate. This issue will be discussed in more depth in the context of English seaside towns, focusing in particular on a case study of Southend‐on‐Sea. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley &Sons, Ltd.     

Smart growth and the septic tank: Wastewater treatment and growth management in the Baltimore region

The purpose of this study is to determine the degree to which residential development in the Baltimore region utilizes septic systems, specifically in the context of Maryland's Priority Funding Area (PFA) policy. Our results indicate that residential development in designated growth areas within the five counties surrounding Baltimore City has, in general, been successfully tethered to sewer infrastructure. However, since passage of Maryland's PFA law, development that utilizes septic tanks has grown significantly and, in some cases, growth has occurred inside PFAs generally when there is a lack of existing sewer services. The proliferation of septic systems is a concern because it encourages low-density sprawl-like development, and has negative environmental consequences since these systems are a non-point source for nitrogen, a major pollutant of concern in the Chesapeake Bay.     

ENDOGENOUS PROCYCLICAL LIQUIDITY,CAPITAL REALLOCATION,AND q

Capital reallocation is procyclical and an economic boom has a cleansing effect by shifting the distribution of firms from low quality to high quality. We explain these facts by modeling search frictions for used capital in the business cycle. The article characterizes the stochastic equilibrium analytically to prove that the liquidity and the price of reallocated capital are procyclical endogenously. We calibrate the model and construct proxies in the data for the unemployment rate of capital and the time on the market. These two variables have a strong positive relationship in both the model and the data.     

Measures of multivariate asymptotic dependence and their relation to spectral expansions

Asymptotic dependence can be interpreted as the property that realizations of the single components of a random vector occur simultaneously with a high probability. Information about the asymptotic dependence structure can be captured by dependence measures like the tail dependence parameter or the residual dependence index. We introduce these measures in the bivariate framework and extend them to the multivariate case afterwards. Within the extreme value theory one can model asymptotic dependence structures by Pickands dependence functions and spectral expansions. Both in the bivariate and in the multivariate case we also compute the tail dependence parameter and the residual dependence index on the basis of this statistical model. They take a specific shape then and are related to the Pickands dependence function and the exponent of variation of the underlying density expansion.     

Determinants of local housing growth in a multi-jurisdictional region,along with a test for nonmarket zoning

In the State of New Jersey, two rural preservation tools are paramount: (1) Zoning that sets a floor on the size of residential lots; and (2) the outright acquisition of open space or its development rights by government and nonprofit entities. The present study explores the effects of these two policies on the number of building permits issued across 83 municipalities in northern New Jersey. The empirical work is based on a widely-used urban development model that uses both monocentric and polycentric factors to allocate growth across a set of suburban communities. The study also develops a growth-based test for binding minimum-lot-size zoning, leveraging the fact that the 83 communities are in a single housing market and must serve the distribution of home and lot-size demand collectively, not individually. The study finds strong evidence of excess large-lot zoning, leading to the suppression of short-term housing growth in communities that specialize in this particular “product.” No firm evidence is found that residential development is attracted to the amenities that flow from either large-lot zoning or open space set asides.     

Gender and teleworking identities in the risk society: a research agenda

This paper discusses the potential implications of a risk society on identities due to alterations in work practices. The promise of 'flexibility' via at-home telework entails a renegotiation of the home–work boundary. This brings into play the gendered identities and roles attached to these different spheres of life. After deconstructing promises made on behalf of telework, we construct an alternative research agenda engaging with writings on changing work identities in the risk society where traditional sureties are called into question.
