The case is investigated when Hoeffding's one sample U–statistic theorem for the sample variance S2 is not applicable. It is shown that this occurs only when the parent distribution is the two–point distribution with jumps of equal magnitude. For this exceptional case the standardised S2 is shown to converge in distribution to (1 – V )√2, where V has chi–square distribution with one degree of freedom.  相似文献

This paper presents empirical evidence that bond mutual funds which have adopted the use of 12b-1 fees have not achieved the goal of lowering expense ratios. Using a model specific to bond funds, as opposed to generic models used in previous studies on equity funds, the analysis confirms that the 12b-1 fee is an additional cost borne by shareholders of the fund without any additional benefit. However, this cost as a percent of the net asset value of the fund has decreased from 1991 through 1994. This reduction coincides with the submission of a proposed rule change by the National Association of Security Dealers concerning maximum sales charges imposed by mutual funds on December 28, 1990 and the implementation of limits on 12b-1 fees which became effective in July of 1993.  相似文献

In this paper a sample of UK mechanical engineering companies is ranked by a number of one-factor and two-factor efficiency measures. Of the one-factor measures, profitability proves to be most closely related to the more theoretically correct two-factor measures. Whilst this empirical finding supports a priori reasoning, care must be taken with its interpretation. For when profitability differences between companies do not reflect efficiency differences, conventional two-factor efficiency measures will themselves be unreliable indicators of true efficiency.  相似文献

This paper estimates lost sales resulting from adverse publicity for a small company soon after it began selling solar hot-water units. Ordinary least squares analysis generates estimates from seasonally adjusted data. To capture the structural shift in sales, alternative series of dummy variables are tested along with other explanatory variables. The present research aims to enhance our understanding of how prospective entrepreneurs benefit from specialized entrepreneurship education combined with a diversified educational experience. We find intriguing evidence that depth or specialization of entrepreneurship education is not enough for wealth creation from future entrepreneurial activities. Instead, it is breadth or diversity of educational experiences that positively influences future wealth creation, in terms of both the entrepreneur’s personal income as well as personal net worth. The results of the study have important implications for entrepreneurship educators and their students, researchers, policy makers, as well as nascent entrepreneurs.  相似文献

Some implications of e-Commerce financial services firms are becoming clear. The web drives transparency, and increases the information endowment of all market participants. It is harder to manipulate customers' behavior, or to overcharge them. Transparency drives differential pricing. Not all customers can or should be charged the same prices. Transparency reduces the viability of cross-subsidies between customers can or between products. The differential pricing enabled by the web transforms distribution channels, and enables direct distribution and alternative forms of distribution. Some intermediateraries may be bypassed altogether, while others may rapidly lose their best, most profitable, and previously most loyal customers.  相似文献

This paper investigates how firms react strategically to investor sentiment via their disclosure policies in an attempt to influence the sentiment‐induced biases in expectations. Proxying for sentiment using the Michigan Consumer Confidence Index, we show that during low‐sentiment periods, managers increase forecasts to “walk up” current estimates of future earnings over long horizons. In contrast, during periods of high sentiment, managers reduce their long‐horizon forecasting activity. Further, while there is an association between sentiment and the biases in analysts' estimates of future earnings, management disclosures vary with sentiment even after controlling for analyst pessimism, indicating that managers attempt to communicate with investors at large, and not just analysts. Our study provides evidence that firms' long‐horizon disclosure choices reflect managers' desire to maintain optimistic earnings valuations.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship between the volume of scientific and technical publications (papers) produced by industrial scientists, and the characteristics of the corporations in which they work. Specifically, the study examines 1. the relationship between several key financial characteristics of U. S. industrial firms and the production of scientific papers; 2. the relationship between the amount of scientific papers published by industrial scientists and the publication of patents; 3. the relationship between the quality of the scientists employed by U. S. industrial firms and the firms' output of papers and patents. Data from 225 U. S. corporations were collected for the years 1975 through 1983. The corporations chosen for the study all have a history of consistent R and D expenditure. There is a substantial correlation between patenting and the publication of scientific papers although controlling for the size of the corporation reduces the correlation. Large firms, as measured by their annual sales, produce proportionately fewer scientific papers than do small firms. The number of elite scientists in a corporation is more highly correlated with the publication of scientific papers than with patenting.  相似文献
