Are the degree of trade openness and the degree of wage centralisation negatively correlated?

This paper presents evidence of a negative correlation between the degree of wage centralisation and the degree of trade openness, which is taken as a proxy measures of international trade integration. The sample data cover a macro-panel of 17 OECD countries over the 1975?C2000 period. The results are robust to alternative estimation methods and after controlling for the endogeneity of the degree of openness. This contrasts with the existing empirical evidence, based on cross-country macroeconomic data, suggesting that more open economies have more centralised wage bargaining institutions on average.     

Marijuana and alcohol: Evidence using border analysis and retail sales data

We use retail scanner data on purchases of alcoholic beverages across US counties for 2006 to 2015 to study the link between medical marijuana laws (MMLs) and alcohol consumption. To do this, we exploit differences in the timing of marijuana laws among states and find that they are substitutes. We show that unlike traditional national-level analysis, focusing on contiguous-border county pairs provides unbiased estimates of the effect of MMLs on alcohol sales. Specifically, alcohol sales in counties located in MML states decreased by 12.4%. Results are robust to including placebo effective dates for MMLs in treated states.

Time series analysis for financial market meltdowns

There appears to be a consensus that the recent instability in global financial markets may be attributable in part to the failure of financial modeling. More specifically, it is alleged that current risk models have failed to properly assess the risks associated with large adverse stock price behavior. In this paper, we first discuss the limitations of classical time series models for forecasting financial market meltdowns. Then we set forth a framework capable of forecasting both extreme events and highly volatile markets. Based on the empirical evidence presented in this paper, our framework offers an improvement over prevailing models for evaluating stock market risk exposure during distressed market periods.     

The accounting practices of a sixteenth-century pastel merchant from the French region of Toulouse

Until the end of the sixteenth century the French region of Toulouse was an important centre for the export of pastel, the plant used at that time to produce blue dye. What does the ledger belonging to the factor of a Toulouse pastel producer (pastelier) teach us about the role played by accounting in the relationship between the factor and the commissioning merchant? Under what accounting methods did the agent carry out his business mission? Was the accounting technique used double entry or that which we could call the factors' accounting system?     

Rent‐Seeking,Market Structure,and Growth

We study the role of productive and unproductive entrepreneurship in economic growth, in a setting where firms compete in both economic and political markets. Specifically, firms compete for market share through cost‐reducing technological innovation, and they vie for influence over government transfer policy through rent‐seeking activities. We find that rent‐seeking affects growth in two ways: it allows firms to ignore economic competition, leading to less innovation, and it alters the number of firms that are supported in equilibrium. The former effect is negative, while the latter is ambiguous. We show how these effects depend on various characteristics of economic and political markets.     

On the Consumer Value of Diversity: An Application to Italian Fish

This article investigates the consumer value of diversity both conceptually and empirically. It proposes a measure of diversity value based on a benefit function. It shows that the consumer value of diversity can arise from complementarity and/or convexity effects among consumer goods. The usefulness of the approach is illustrated by an application to fish in Italy. The investigation illustrates the role played by both convexity and complementarity in the valuation of diversity. The empirical evidence shows the importance of dynamics. It also documents how the value of diversity varies depending on the bundles considered.
