A COMPARISON OF RISK EFFICIENCY CRITERIA IN EVALUATING GROUNDNUT PERFORMANCE IN DROUGHT-PRONE AREAS

This paper contributes to an evaluation of the performance of ground nuts in drought-prone areas by estimating yield response functions to water from experimental data. They are combined with meteorological data to simulate yields by location. Efficient genotypes are identified by several risk criteria. Genotype rankings based on these risk criteria and simulated yields are different from those based on experimental data and plant scientists' traditional methods of evaluation.     

Industrywide technical product standards

Technology, by its very nature, creates a high degree of interdependence in the industrial marketplace. Customers buy products for use with other products in a production system. The consequent requirement for technical compatibility constrains managers' freedom in developing products and marketing programmes. lndustrywide product standards, and the process of setting them, play a complex and little discussed role in enabling managers to deal with these constraints. This article provides a market-based examination of product standards and that role.     

Managing customer relationships. The challenge of deploying scarce managerial resources

In industrial markets many managers from marketing, technical service and production functions interact with customers. How should these managers be allocated to an evolving array of customers? This paper reports on the customer visits made by the managers of one packaging supplier. The visits of the marketing people seem related to the financial significance of the customer, whereas the technical visits are best understood by a ‘portfolio’ approach. At the same time many idiosyncratic and situational factors affect resource deployments.
