Dynamic pairs trading using the stochastic control approach

We propose a model for analyzing dynamic pairs trading strategies using the stochastic control approach. The model is explored in an optimal portfolio setting, where the portfolio consists of a bank account and two co-integrated stocks and the objective is to maximize for a fixed time horizon, the expected terminal utility of wealth. For the exponential utility function, we reduce the problem to a linear parabolic partial differential equation which can be solved in closed form. In particular, we exhibit the optimal positions in the two stocks.     

Program planning with Tobit analysis—the United States food stamp case

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the usefulness of the Tobit model in program planning. The avenue of display is the U.S. Food Stamp Program. Special analytical problems are encountered when the number of eligible nonparticipants of government programs is substantial. Under such circumstances difficulties arise with the use of ordinary regression techniques. The Tobit model is designed to reliably estimate relations from data encumbered with obstacles of this kind. Applications shown herein include program participation prediction and elasticities and probability changes associated with isolated exogenous variable changes.     

Asset pricing dynamics

This paper is concerned with the issue of dynamics in financial data and asset pricing models such as the CAPM. A literature review in this area is undertaken and highlights the need for a modern time series econometric approach in asset pricing. Such an approach is discussed and deals with problems related to structural breaks and microstructures, dynamics in the mean and variance process, and non-stationary regressions and cointegration. An empirical application using UK stock market data demonstrates the merit of the proposed methodology in correcting market model regressions.

通过对全国范围内200家旅游院校的调查,本文旨在指出中国旅游教育的特点和存在的问题,问卷显示,由于中国旅游业的不断发展,中国旅游教育院校的数量在10年中有了长足的发展。但是,在师资力量,学生实践经验以及国际化程度方面有待于进一步的提高。调查结果也显示了影响学生进入或留在旅游行业的因素中,薪酬是最重要的一个因素。     

Does the weather affect stock market volatility?

This paper investigates the empirical association between stock market volatility and investor mood-proxies related to the weather (cloudiness, temperature and precipitation) and the environment (nighttime length). Overall, our results suggest that cloudiness and length of nighttime are inversely related to historical, implied and realized measures of volatility. The strength of association seems to vary with the location of an exchange on Earth with respect to the equator. Weather deviations from seasonal norms and dummies representing extreme weather conditions do not offer additional explanatory power in our datasets.     

KNOWLEDGE ACCUMULATION WITHIN AN ORGANIZATION

In this article, we consider a knowledge accumulation problem within an organization that cannot prevent the worker from quitting and using the knowledge outside the organization. We show that knowledge accumulation is delayed: The fraction of working time allocated to knowledge creation is highest at the early career stage, falls gradually, then rises again, before falling finally toward zero. We determine the effect of a change in the severity of the enforcement problem (or the specificity of knowledge). We also discuss the form of the optimal life‐cycle wage profiles, the role of the initial knowledge level, and the role of discounting.     

MATCHING SUBSIDIES AND VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS: A REVIEW

This paper provides a synthesis of the experimental literature on matching subsidies in the context of charitable giving. We classify results according to four different outcome variables frequently considered in the literature and address (i) short‐term effects of linear matching, (ii) the role of the matching rate, (iii) context‐dependence of behavioural responses, (iv) the relevance of the price of giving, (v) long‐term effects and (vi) nonlinear matching schemes. Based on this comprehensive review, we highlight several avenues for future research, such as putting stronger emphasis on competition in fundraising, long‐term effects or heterogeneity in responses.     

A Test of Cultural Affinity in Home Mortgage Lending

This paper assess cultural affinity as a potential explanation for observed racial disparities in mortgage rejection rates. Two formulations of the theory have evolved in the literature. The taste-based cultural affinity hypothesis asserts that lenders have a blanket preference for members of the same race, while the common bond hypothesis asserts that cultural affinity allows lenders to better assess the credit quality of members of the same race. The analysis involves tests that focus on the experiences of applicants with marginal credit quality, as the two theories offer conflicting predictions regarding their application patterns and treatment by lenders. The results of these tests provide weak support for the existence of taste-based cultural affinity, but contradict the predictions of the common bond form of the theory.     

Policy,planning and program development: Case study—adolescent pregnancy

The role of the Federal Government in stimulating local/regional/state action to pursue clearly identified problems is examined, with case study focused on the problem of adolescent pregnancy. Critical analysis is undertaken of the legislative framework within which health policy and programming is formulated and implemented and the directions and limitations inherent in increased volunteerism in the public sector.
