The surge in new resource projects has been a prominent feature of the recent strong performance of the Australian economy, with mining and energy investment accounting for almost one‐half of all private investment. Although the current round of resource investment has now peaked, as swings in the resource sector tend to repeat themselves, there is an ongoing need to carefully understand the available information sources. We use a specially developed panel of matched projects from three widely followed, but under‐researched, sources to analyze cost inflation, the biases, the degree of independence, and timeliness of each source. This information is of use to policy makers who have to closely monitor these developments, analysts following the resources sector, and project proponents wanting to know something about the typical cost profile of a project. 相似文献

Trading volume and order flow have both been closely associated with informed trader activity in the market microstructure literature. Using theory that explains regular intraday patterns in trading data, we transform these two variables into proxies for private information and examine their relationships with bid–ask spreads and return volatility. We use a unique and unusually rich high-frequency intraday dataset from the world's largest financial market, namely, the electronic inter-dealer spot foreign exchange market. Our analysis takes account of institutional features peculiar to this order-driven market. Our empirical results strongly affirm our theoretical understanding of how these markets work. They also reveal how the structure of the inter-dealer spot FX market affects exchange rate volatility. Finally, we also explore how private information contributes to the evolution of prices. 相似文献

This paper reviews the basic principles of inequality measurement, underlining the advantages and shortcomings of alternative measures from a theoretical standpoint and in the context of the study of the distribution of wealth. Adopting the two most popular measures, the Gini index and the P‐shares, the paper documents wealth inequality in Canada using the 1999, 2005 and 2012 Survey of Financial Security (SFS). It carries out several decompositions with covariates, featuring DFL‐type reweighting methods and Gini and P‐shares RIF regressions. The latter parallel decompositions deepen our understanding of how changes in socio‐demographic characteristics, including the compensating role of family formation and human capital, impact wealth inequality. 相似文献

We estimate a semiparametric dynamic panel data model by the local linear kernel method and we interpret the slope of the
nonparametric component function as a varying slope coefficient. Thus, the slope coefficient is a smooth, but otherwise unknown,
function of some of the regressors. A Monte Carlo experiment is reported to examine the finite sample performance of the local
linear estimator. We apply the estimation method to a labor supply equation for men from the triannual Survey of Income and
Program Participation (SIPP). Specification tests based on the estimated labor supply elasticities, partial adjustment coefficients,
and residuals demonstrate the improvements from a semiparametric partially linear model. Our empirical results point to a
need by economists to revisit the issue of the speed of labor market adjustment to policy induced shifts in labor demand and
to take more formal econometric account of heterogeneity in wage effects when studying the distributional consequences of
tax reforms for labor supply earnings.

Private sector incentives to participate in research partnerships can be grouped roughly into two categories: cost-economizing incentives and strategic incentives. This paper summarizes the argument in two streams of thought that are often identified with these two sides: the transaction-cost/incomplete contracts approach and the strategic management approach. The paper recounts business motives to engage in research partnerships in each and points out that differentiating between more traditional economic perspectives (transaction costs, incomplete contracts) and strategic management/organizational theory perspectives (strategic networks, resource-dependent view, dynamic capabilities, knowledge-based view, organizational learning, options approach) may not be as sharp as one might suppose at first. While innovators may rush to purchase many new products, most consumers are more conservative and do not want to buy into fads but purchase only those new products that are viable. How do the majority of consumers make judgments about whether they will adopt an innovation? This article examines the evaluative aspects of adoption as a means for better understanding consumer adoption and the market factors that may influence the success of an innovation. This research introduces a conceptual model that shows how consumers’ evaluation of product category attractiveness affects the adoption decision for really new products. These consumer evaluations are based on the attributes of the product category (“extrabrand” attributes) rather than brand attributes. This study presents a two-phase model of interfirm exchange in the logistical supply industry. The first phase uses transaction
cost analysis to identify conditions leading to market-based transactions, unilateral agreements, and bilateral alliances.
The second phase illustrates how formal controls and relational norms yield performance in market, unilateral, and bilateral
governance systems. A test of the model with data from 189 logistical supply relationships suggests that bilateral alliances
emerge through the interaction of user investments in the logistics supplier, supplier logistical services, and marketplace
uncertainty. Bilateral alliances attain desired outcomes through participative management and flexibility. By contrast, market-based
transactions yield desired outcomes through formalization and solidarity. Unilateral agreements gain performance through formalization,
participation, information sharing, and solidarity. Implications for logistics management and theory are discussed.
