This paper examines the relationship between the readability of the CD&A section in proxy statements and management motives to obfuscate executive compensation disclosures. Using the CD&As in the 2007 and 2008 proxy statements, we examine whether the CD&A readability is associated with the proportion of CEO pay not related to the economic determinants of compensation. We note that the average CD&A is difficult to read. We find that firms with CEO pay exceeding the benchmark pay have a more difficult to read CD&A in the 2007 proxy season. The result suggests that, in its first CD&A report, top management tends to cloak its compensation practices when the practices are not tied to the economic determinants of pay. However, we also find those firms with CEO pay exceeding the benchmark pay improve the readability of their CD&As in the 2008 proxy season, suggesting that executive compensation disclosure improves under regulatory oversight and public pressure.  相似文献

A significant conceptual and practical challenge for companies is how to integrate triple bottom line (TBL) sustainability into their global supply chains. In supply chain research, the classic economic perspective—the business of business is to be profitable—still dominates, followed by coverage of the environmental dimension; the social dimension is underrepresented. Stakeholders, however, are calling for a TBL perspective that simultaneously includes environmental, social, and economic gains. While there have been recent theoretical advances on how to characterize supply chains in terms of their structure, how to connect these insights into supply chain design for TBL sustainability has not been studied. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to move the theory of supply chain forward into the sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) research agenda. Toward that purpose, the paper analyzes the sustainable supply chain design (SSCD) at social businesses, incorporating the physical chain and the information and financial support chains. Four social businesses located in Haiti are used as cases of innovative supply chain structures for TBL sustainability. By analyzing the supply chain structures and boundaries of these social businesses, three supply chain configurations combining physical and support chains are presented.  相似文献

Several studies conducted by the European Union (e.g., Eurostat 2004, Implementation of “education & training 2010” work programme) demonstrate that women and girls are consistently significantly underrepresented in technological education, areas, and jobs. This is highlighted in the Joint Interim Report “Education and Training 2010” by the European Commission under the domain of Maths, Science and Technology (MST). The joint report highlights the persistent shortage of women in technical fields and calls on Member States to encourage the development of a technical culture among its citizens. In particular, it was recommended that action be taken to motivate young people, especially girls, to undertake scientific and technical studies and careers. In this paper we will explore issues related to the delivery of technology education in the middle and secondary school sectors. Other papers in this special edition consider various curricula from around Europe and offer an analysis of early years and primary education in this respect. We do not intend to undertake an in-depth analysis of technology education curricula in the secondary sector but will, rather, explore the kinds of perceptions that are held by school students about technology and technology education when they enter into the secondary stages. We will argue that technology education is perceived to be masculine in nature, procedural in delivery and lacking in any conceptual dimension. This, we will claim, serves to restrict female interest in the subject. We will also discuss a case study undertaken in the name of the UPDATE project that attempts to redress this imbalance. It should be noted, however, that whilst the emphasis in this paper is on the female, it must be acknowledged that the same conclusions will also hold for many males.  相似文献

This study assesses the psychological contracts of a group of at-will employees and compares their relevant psychological contract beliefs with the terms of the controlling legal employment contract. In addition, we test specific hypotheses regarding the relationship between employers formal job security policy (employment at-will vs. good cause protection, and employee personal characteristics; equity sensitivity, organizational tenure) to 2 focal psychological contract beliefs (the employers obligation to have a good reason to discharge the employee, and the employees reciprocal obligation to have a good reason to leave his/her employer). These issues are investigated using survey data sampled from 15 diverse U.S. organizations, and independently collected information regarding organizations job security policies. The results provide evidence of a widely shared psychological contract belief that, despite explicit at-will policies, U.S. employers are highly obligated to have a good reason to discharge employees. Further, personal characteristics are more strongly related to the focal psychological contract beliefs than employer job security policies. The theoretical contribution of the study and its practical implications are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Patient engagement has gained increasing prominence within academic literatures and policy discourse. With limited developments in practice, most extant academic contributions are conceptual, with initiatives in the National Health Service (NHS) concentrating at macro- rather than at micro-level. This may be one reason why the issue of ‘value co-creation’ has received limited attention within academic discussions of patient engagement or policy pronouncements. Drawing on emerging ideas in the services marketing and public management literatures, this article offers the first elucidation of the importance of studying ‘value co-creation’ as a basis for further empirical analysis of patient engagement in micro-level encounters.  相似文献

The Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL) is a generic health-related quality of life (HRQL) measure. It is the only HRQL instrument, currently available, that incorporates health preference values derived from an Australian population and has been extensively trialled in over 40 studies. However, prior to this study, it had not been used to measure HRQL in injury patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the AQoL, as a measure of the impact of injury on HRQL, by examining its correlation with other commonly used measures of health outcome and its ability to discriminate between groups with injuries of varying type and severity. A total of 221 admitted injury patients, aged 18-74 years, were recruited into the study from four major Victorian metropolitan hospitals and followed up over 12 months. The AQoL and the SF-36 were administered to obtain retrospective measures of pre-injury HRQL and health status with post-injury measurements obtained at five intervals post-injury (to 12 months). A preliminary analysis of data from this study showed the AQoL was positively related to other common outcome measures and, overall, showed a strong correlation with the SF-36 Physical Component Summary and a moderate correlation with the Mental Component Summary. It also demonstrated good discrimination between groups on the basis of type of injury, body region injured and severity of injury. While further testing of the AQoL, in this context, is still necessary, this study suggests that the AQoL may be a useful measure of the impact of injury on HRQL.  相似文献

Using a multi-source data set collected across eight European countries, this article examines how characteristics of both the organizational environment and the larger national context relate to the organizational-level variable of women's employment. Our study revealed that, in countries that were high in gender empowerment measure (GEM), establishments that were more supportive of part-time work options also employed a higher proportion of women. One reason for this relationship may be that in high-GEM countries offering part-time employment is a way for an organization to signal its support for work–life balance, something that makes it more attractive to women. In countries with low GEM, an establishment's greater support for part-time work was associated with employing a greater proportion of women only when establishments experienced recruitment difficulties. Key differences in gender empowerment between countries are discussed.  相似文献
