In accordance with cognitive dissonance theory, individuals generally avoid information that is not consistent with their cognitions, to avoid psychological discomfort associated with tensions arising from contradictory beliefs. Information avoidance may thus make risk communication less successful. To address this, we presented information on red meat risks to red meat consumers. To explore information exposure effects, attitudes toward red meat and perceived knowledge of red meat risks were measured before, immediately after, and two weeks after exposure. We expected information avoidance of red meat risks to be: positively related to (1) study discontentment; and (2) positive attitudes toward red meat; and negatively related to (3) information seeking on red meat risks; and (4) systematic and heuristic processing of information. In addition, following exposure to the risk information, we expected that (5) individuals who scored high in avoidance of red meat risks information to change their attitudes and perceived risk knowledge less than individuals who scored low in avoidance. Results were in line with the first three expectations. Support for the fourth was partial insofar as this was only confirmed regarding systematic processing. The final prediction was not confirmed; individuals who scored high in avoidance decreased the positivity of their attitudes and increased their perceived knowledge in a similar fashion to those who scored low in avoidance. These changes stood over the two-week follow-up period. Results are discussed in accordance with cognitive dissonance theory, with the possible use of suppression strategies, and with the corresponding implications for risk communication practice. 相似文献

Direct evidence has been lacking on entrepreneurs’ response to individual‐specific opportunities, and recent work suggests that entrepreneurship may be a non‐profit‐seeking activity and that entrepreneurs evaluate risk oddly. We model heterogeneous inventors and inventions, outside opportunities, sunk and nonsunk costs, and risk, to guide data analysis. We use assessment data from a center paid to assess the inventions’ economic potential. Inventors’ choices whether to commercialize their inventions and later whether to remain in production were consistent with profit‐seeking motives and risk aversion. 相似文献

This article addresses the growing industry of retail socially responsible investment (SRI) profiled mutual funds. Very few
previous studies have examined the final consumer of SRI profiled mutual funds. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to,
in an exploratory manner, examine the impact of a number of pro-social, financial performance, and socio-demographic variables
on SRI behavior in order to explain why investors choose to invest different proportions of their investment portfolio in
SRI profiled funds. An ordinal logistic regression analysis on 528 private investors revealed that two of the three pro-social
variables had a positive impact on how much the consumer invested in SRI profiled funds. Moreover, there was proof of a non-altruistic
motive for investing in SRI as consumers who perceive that financial return of SRI is equal or better than “regular” mutual
funds, invested a greater proportion of their portfolio in SRI profiled mutual funds. Furthermore, the results showed that
women and better-educated investors were more likely to invest a greater proportion of their investment portfolio in SRI.
Overall, the findings indicate that both financial perceptions and pro-social attitudes are connected to consumer investment

The implementation of the Biofuels Directive (2003/30/EC) in 25 member states is assessed here. Implementation problems are identified and analysed for the purpose of suggesting a way forward for biofuels policy in the European Union. Three main patterns are observed: effective implementation, formal compliance and weak implementation. Problems encountered in the policy process are both of a practical and more fundamental nature, i.e., due to a lack of consensus on the priority of competing policy objectives and disagreement on the suitability of first-generation biofuels for reaching the objectives. In this situation, stronger enforcement of targets does not appear to be a constructive way forward. Based on our analysis, we argue that the European Union should instead, and in agreement with the principle of subsidiarity, allow member states more flexibility. 相似文献

We examine how corporate insiders’ cognitive ability (IQ) affects their decisions to time insider and outsider trading before abnormal stock price changes. Our analysis of archival data on male corporate insiders in Sweden shows they are less prone to time their insider selling and to sell in larger amounts, before abnormal stock price declines as IQ increases. We also find that insiders with a higher IQ are better at timing their outsider buying. Taken together, our results show that corporate insiders’ IQ affects their trading decisions differently, depending on whether they are trading in their insider or outsider stocks. 相似文献

We investigate the out-of-sample forecasting performance of various monetary aggregates in four-variate models of real output growth, inflation, changes in an interest rate, and nominal money growth from 1992 to 2004 using vector autoregressive (VAR) and regime-switching (RS) VAR models. We consider both Divisia and simple sum monetary aggregates for M1, M2M, M2, and M3 as well as sweep-adjusted M1 measures. We find little evidence that either aggregation method or level of aggregation has a big impact on the forecasting performance of our model with respect to inflation and real output growth. Our results indicate that VAR models with monetary aggregates appear to produce at best marginal improvements in RMSE over VAR models that omit money growth altogether. We also find that RS-VAR models usually provide better one quarter ahead forecasts than comparable VAR models, but often did worse when forecasting inflation four quarters ahead. 相似文献

Abstract The aim of this article is to explore how retail store image is perceived by consumers from different cultural backgrounds and with different degrees of awareness and experience of the retailer. The subject is IKEA, a retailer recognized as having a global approach to the markets in which it operates, resulting in a highly standardized approach to store branding. However, rather than employing traditional methodologies to elicit consumer perceptions of store image, we attempt to capture consumer perceptions through interpretations of the visual images generated by the participants themselves. The photo-elicitation method employed captured the different interpretations and meanings attached to commonly identified elements of store image and reinforced the central role played by the store itself in retail image formation. 相似文献
