This paper examines alternative ways to prevent losses from bank insolvencies. We develop a model that compares two alternative institutions for bank auditing. The first is a system of central bank auditing of national banks. The second is carried out by an international agency that collects and disseminates risk information on banks in all countries. The international auditor is shown to perform at least as well, and sometimes better than, auditing by either central banks or voluntary disclosure by the banks themselves in preventing losses. The international auditor's credibility comes from the fact that its incentives are not distorted by a sovereignty bias. 相似文献

In this article, the important but neglected link between workplace safety-enhancing behavior and ethics is explored. Using
data from 237 employees from five manufacturing plants in the Midwest, we investigated how specific local ethical climate
types are linked to incidences of injuries and two types of safety-enhancing behaviors: safety compliance and safety participation.
It was hypothesized that egoist climates are positively related to injuries and negatively related to safety-enhancing behaviors.
In contrast, it is proposed that both benevolent and principled climates have negative relationships with injuries and positive
relationships with safety-enhancing behaviors. Results provided support only for our principled climate types while benevolence
has the desired negative relationship with injuries. Egoism and benevolence are not related to safety-enhancing behaviors.
Theoretical and practical implications of findings are discussed.

The article makes three contributions to the economics literature on entrepreneurship. We offer a new measure of entrepreneurship
which accounts for variations in persistence in self-employment and as a result avoids the weakness of approaches which categorise
an individual as an entrepreneur by observing their occupation at just one point in their career. We outline an econometric
methodology to account for this approach and find, via a statistical test of model selection, that it is superior to probit/logit
models, which have dominated the literature. While our results indicate that this existing literature is good at explaining
an individual’s propensity to try self-employment, we find that entrepreneurial persistence is determined by a different model and unearth some new insights. Early self-employment encourages entrepreneurial persistence.
For men, inheritance encourages persistence, and facilitates initial self-employment. Having a self-employed father as a role
model makes sons persist longer. However, somewhat surprisingly, early experience of unemployment does not affect the probability
of self-employment, while reducing persistence. The popular ‘unemployment push effect’ is thus rejected in our sample.

A wide range of decision-making models have been offered to assist in making ethical decisions in the workplace. Those that are based on normative moral frameworks typically include elements of traditional moral philosophy such as consequentialist and/or deontological␣ethics. This paper suggests an alternative model drawing on Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialism. Accordingly, the model focuses on making decisions in full awareness of one’s freedom and responsibility. The steps of the model are intended to encourage reflection of one’s projects and one’s situation and the possibility of refusing the expectations of others. A case study involving affirmative action in South Africa is used to demonstrate the workings of the model and a number of strengths and weaknesses are identified. Despite several weaknesses that can be raised regarding existential ethics, the model’s success lies in the way that it reframes ethical dilemmas in terms of individual freedom and responsibility, and in its acceptance and analysis of subjective experiences and personal situations. Agriculture looms large on the WTO's agenda. It was the first substantive item listed in the work programme of the Ministerial Declaration launching the Doha Round, and it was arguably at the centre of the failure at Cancun. Developing countries made it clear both before and during the Cancun meeting that progress on agriculture was their primary objective. Negotiations in other areas have received less attention and progressed more slowly. This paper considers that prioritisation, and suggests that the interests of developing countries in the current round of trade negotiations are much broader than is suggested by the narrow range of agricultural issues that have dominated negotiations. This paper examines the comprehensive IRS data set of state-state migration flows for evidence that differences in state income tax rates are associated with migration patterns. Using annual data on moves between every pair of states, pooled time-series cross-section regressions indicate that in the 1992–2010 period states with higher top marginal income tax rates experienced relatively greater outmigration of taxpayers and gross income. To illustrate the magnitude of the tax effect, we estimate that by 2010 cumulative losses since the enactment of New Jersey’s 2004 “millionaires’ tax” were as much as 42,000 taxpayers and $6.9 billion in annual adjusted gross income. These results suggest that sustained, relatively high income tax rates could gradually erode a state’s population and revenue base. 相似文献

The use of advergames for the purpose of brand and product promotion is growing in popularity as the mobile gaming industry expands. The extant research on advergames, however, has focused primarily on factors influencing the effectiveness of in‐game advertising (e.g., banner and pop‐up ads appearing beside gameplay). Therefore, this research seeks to examine the impact of branded content integrated directly into the mechanics of a game. Across two studies, the influence of common game mechanics (e.g., shooting, collecting, avoiding) on affective and attentional processes are investigated by manipulating the design elements of a custom advergame. The results suggest that advergame mechanics can influence subsequent choices through perceptual fluency and affective transfer.
