Consumers who are infertile and decide to use assisted reproductive technologies undergo lengthy, expensive and potentially risky medical procedures in their quest for a pregnancy and a live birth. In this research we use a consumer model of decision making to analyse the process. We review information available to consumers and we assess use of an online bulletin board which gives consumers social support and medical information during the process. Awareness of the environmental problems associated with conventional finfish aquaculture has stimulated interest in more sustainable production methods. For example, integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) combines the culturing of fish and extractive aquaculture species at one site to simulate a balanced natural system. In contrast, closed containment aquaculture (CCA) separates farming from the natural marine environment using closed water tanks on land or in water. We explore consumer preferences for salmon produced with IMTA or CCA rather than conventional technology and pose two questions: how aware of IMTA and CCA are salmon consumers on the U.S. West Coast and what are they willing to pay for salmon produced with these methods? Using a discrete choice experiment, we estimate marginal willingness‐to‐pay of 39.0% and 15.7% for IMTA and CCA, respectively, as a premium added to the price of conventionally farmed Atlantic salmon. Results using latent class analysis show that consumers with a strong preference for wild salmon have high marginal values for farmed salmon produced with IMTA or CCA, but the average consumer from this group would be unlikely to purchase it. Overall, 44.3% and 16.2% of the respondents preferred IMTA or CCA to conventional salmon farming, respectively, and IMTA was preferred to CCA when respondents were asked to choose one. La sensibilisation aux problèmes environnementaux liés à l’élevage de poissons classique suscite un intérêt pour des méthodes de production plus durables. Par exemple, l'aquaculture multitrophique intégrée (AMTI) combine l’élevage de poissons et d'espèces d'extraction sur un même site afin d'imiter un écosystème naturel équilibré. En revanche, l'aquaculture en parc clos (APC) consiste en un élevage hors du milieu marin naturel à l'aide de réservoirs étanches installés sur le sol ou dans l'eau. Dans la présente étude, nous avons analysé les préférences des consommateurs pour le saumon issu de l'AMTI ou de l'APC et celui issu de l’élevage classique. Nous nous sommes également posé deux questions : À quel point les consommateurs de saumon de la côte Ouest des États‐Unis connaissent‐ils l'AMTI et l'APC, et combien sont‐ils prêts à payer pour obtenir du saumon issu de ces méthodes de production? À l'aide de la méthode des choix discrets, nous avons obtenu un consentement à payer marginal de 39,0 % pour l'AMTI et de 15,7 % pour l'APC, de plus que le prix du saumon de l'Atlantique issu de l’élevage classique. Les résultats de l'analyse des classes latentes ont montré que les consommateurs qui affichaient une préférence marquée pour le saumon sauvage avaient des valeurs marginales élevées pour le saumon issu de l'AMTI ou de l'APC, mais qu'il était peu probable que le consommateur moyen de ce groupe en achète. How much ownership is enough to exert strategic control over partners in the global marketplace? Top management frequently will attempt to have strategic influence over partners when it comes to the strategic direction of the organization. The question becomes, “what gives one partner control over another, and where does that power come from in the relationship?” This research examines the issue of strategic control in organizations in Australia and the United States to determine how to control global relationships. The research found that: (1) ownership is positively related to the degree of strategic control; (2) directness of ownership is positively related to the degree of strategic control; (3) dispersion is negatively related to the degree of strategic control; (4) board membership is positively related to the degree of strategic control; and (5) strategic control between U.S. and Australian organizations/relationships is different. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

For most of the items they buy, consumers don't have an accurate sense of what the price should be. Ask them to guess how much a four-pack of 35-mm film costs, and you'll get a variety of wrong answers: Most people will underestimate; many will only shrug. Research shows that consumers' knowledge of the market is so far from perfect that it hardly deserves to be called knowledge at all. Yet people happily buy film and other products every day. Is this because they don't care what kind of deal they're getting? No. Remarkably, it's because they rely on retailers to tell them whether they're getting a good price. In subtle and not-so-subtle ways, retailers send signals to customers, telling them whether a given price is relatively high or low. In this article, the authors review several common pricing cues retailers use--"sale" signs, prices that end in 9, signpost items, and price-matching guarantees. They also offer some surprising facts about how--and how well--those cues work. For instance, the authors' tests with several mail-order catalogs reveal that including the word "sale" beside a price can increase demand by more than 50%. The practice of using a 9 at the end of a price to denote a bargain is so common, you'd think customers would be numb to it. Yet in a study the authors did involving a women's clothing catalog, they increased demand by a third just by changing the price of a dress from $34 to $39. Pricing cues are powerful tools for guiding customers' purchasing decisions, but they must be applied judiciously. Across the industrialised world, there is evidence that both the incidence and the severity of occupational violence and bullying are increasingly being reported over time. While there have been few substantive scientific studies in Australia, all the available evidence shows a similar increasing level of risk. It has long been assumed that those who suffer a physical assault during the course of violent events are more likely to be emotionally traumatised by the experience than are those who are merely threatened or bullied at work. However, there are no substantive data published to date. In this paper the authors aim to elucidate and quantify the extent of emotional injury/stress suffered as a result of different forms of occupational violence, based on empirical data collected during face-to-face interviewing of 800 Australian workers employed in the tertiary education, health and long-haul transport industry sectors. The authors conclude that the impact from more covert forms of occupational violence (such as bullying) can, in many instances, at least equal the emotional trauma following assaults on-the-job. 相似文献

The development of a distance learning module, to be undertaken by students whilst out on work experience in a thick sandwich degree programme, was driven by the motive to maximize the students' time on placement, rather than the belief that the module could be more effectively taught in this manner. However, with many institutions offering work placement as an optional extension within a degree programme, our experiences may pave the way for introducing some academic input into the work placement. This paper outlines the development and operation of an auditing distance learning module, which is undertaken by students during their placement year in an Accounting and Finance degree in Scotland. The pitfalls of distance learning have been well documented and the profile of the cohort which would undertake the course exacerbated concerns. However, the Course Team have produced a model that has been implemented and is currently operating in a manner that has largely satisfied all respective stakeholders, (namely students, educators, employers, professional bodies, and external examiners). The data for the review was generated through informal discussions with the Course Team and a selection of employers. Focus groups with students were also conducted. These were deliberately unstructured in nature to facilitate the use of dialogue with which the participants were familiar. The rationale for this was to allow participants to identify and highlight salient issues as perceived by them, rather than to answer specific questions on topics that the authors believed to be of relevance. 相似文献

This paper extends the standard, urban, residential land-use model to analyze the effects of Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage insurance. On the demand side, households are differentiated by income and tenure; on the supply side, the cost of housing is related to the asset prices of land and structure and the cost of capital. Hypothesizing that capital cost is a function of household tenure and income, tenure is chosen to minimize this cost. The effect of FHA, then, is to expand the housing consumption of moderate-middle income households, by reducing their capital cost, while displacing those whose cost is not reduced. 相似文献

Diverse theories have predicted a trend towards growing work pressure in advanced capitalist societies, while pointing to quite distinct causal factors. This paper seeks to assess these arguments using data from two surveys of employees in European Union member‐states carried out in 1996 and in 2001. It finds there is no evidence of a trend towards higher work pressure over this period. There is, however, support for some of the main arguments about the types of factors that affect work pressure: for instance, skill, job control, new technology and current job security are clearly important. But the trends in job control and job security have not been those predicted, while changes in another major determinant — the length of working hours — have tended to reduce work pressure. There are substantial and relatively stable differences in work pressure between countries, but to a considerable extent, these reflect compositional differences with respect to the main determinants of work pressure. 相似文献
