Prospective advertisers occasionally cannot obtain space for their messages in newspapers. In a recent case, for example, the Amalgamated Clothing Workers challenged the four Chicago daily newspapers. These “refusal to deal” cases involve three major points. First, the First Amendment protects the disseminator of messages but does not assure that messages will ever be distributed. Second, the newspaper industry is essentially one of local monopolies with a few scattered local oligopolies; future rivalry is unlikely. And, third, the courts generally have been sympathetic to the publisher who refuses an advertisement, but the broadcast media are under greater legal obligation to present both sides of controversial issues.  相似文献

The present article examines the predictive ability of gender identity congruity in explaining women's responses to advertising appeals. The contributions of the article are twofold: (1) to demonstrate whether advertisements that are congruent with female consumers' gender identities elicit strong positive responses and (2) to identify the factors that moderate/mediate the impact of gender identity congruity on consumer responses to advertisements. The research findings provide evidence of the ability of gender identity congruity to elicit positive responses to advertising appeals. The relationship between gender identity congruity and responses to the advertisement is mediated by advertising involvement. The moderating roles of national culture, physical concern, and physical view are also supported. Overall, the congruity theory provides a powerful framework to examine consumer responses to gender portrayals in advertising. ©2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Objectives of this study were to examine ownership and visibility of alcohol promotional clothing items (APCIs) and association between APCI ownership and alcohol use. Participants were 154 females and 106 males in grades 7 through 12; 76.3% had tried drinking alcohol; more than 36% owned an APCI, most commonly T‐shirts and hats. Although only 5% wore an APCI to school, more than 50% reported seeing one at school. There was a difference among groups: 83.9% of established drinkers, 36.2% of susceptible experimental drinkers, 33.3% of susceptible nondrinkers, 28.9% of nonsusceptible experimental drinkers, and 17.5% of nonsusceptible nondrinkers owned APCIs. Participants who received an APCI from a parent were more likely to perceive that their parents approved of them drinking.  相似文献

This study examined differences between men and women and among fashion consumer groups (fashion innovators, fashion opinion leaders, innovative communicators, and fashion followers) in propensity toward boredom. Participants (126 male, 130 female university students) completed questionnaires measuring fashion group membership, boredom proneness, and demographics. anova revealed significant effects for fashion group for two dimensions of boredom proneness: internal stimulation and constraint. Innovative communicators indicated lower propensity for boredom because of need for internal stimulation but more propensity for boredom because of constraint than fashion followers. Men indicated greater propensity for boredom because of need for external stimulation than women did.  相似文献

These remarks summarize the economic forecast and budget outlook that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) published in February 2014. The discussion has not been updated to reflect subsequent economic and budget data or subsequent projections by CBO. Under an assumption that current laws governing federal taxes and spending remain in place, CBO projects that real GDP will expand by roughly 3 percent between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the fourth quarter of 2014—the largest rise in nearly a decade. Similar annual growth rates are projected through 2017. Nevertheless, CBO estimates that the economy will continue to have considerable slack for the next few years. To a large degree, the slow recovery of the labor market since the official end of the recession in 2009 reflects slow growth in the demand for goods and services. To a smaller degree, that slow recovery is the result of structural factors that stem from the recession and the subsequent weak growth of output but that are not directly related to the economy’s current cyclical weakness. The unemployment rate is expected to remain above 6.0 percent until late 2016. Moreover, labor force participation is projected to move only slowly back toward what it would be without the cyclical weakness in the economy. Beyond 2017, CBO expects that economic growth will be well below the average seen over the past several decades, primarily because of slower growth in the labor force arising from the aging of the population. Inflation, as measured by the change in the price index for personal consumption expenditures, is expected to remain at or below 2.0 percent throughout the next decade. Interest rates on Treasury securities are projected to increase in the next few years as the economy strengthens. The federal budget deficit has fallen sharply during the past few years, and it is on a path to decline further this year and next year. However, if current laws remain unchanged, the deficit will increase again after a few years because revenues are expected to grow at roughly the same pace as GDP whereas spending is expected to grow more rapidly. Federal debt held by the public is expected to equal 74 percent of GDP at the end of this year and close to 80 percent a decade from now.  相似文献

In this era of increased global cooperation, a growing number of negotiators conduct business in multiple countries and, therefore, need access to a systematic comparison of negotiating tendencies across a wide range of countries. Empirical work systematically comparing variations across a range of cultures is scarce. A comparative analysis of negotiating tendencies in five countries is presented. This study establishes the utility of the [Salacuse, J. (1998) Ten ways that culture affects negotiating style: Some survey results. Negotiation Journal, 14(3): 221–235] framework in identifying country differences across five countries, representing five cultural clusters. Significant differences in negotiation orientations both between and within cultures were revealed at a level of complexity not found in previous empirical studies.  相似文献

The “Big Eight” accounting firms are alleged to dominate the setting of accounting and auditing standards. This paper identifies the recent criticisms and reviews the standard setting procedures of the APB, FASB, and the ASB. The results of five empirical studies designed to investigate the alleged domination issue are summarized. The conclusion drawn is that there is no empirical evidence to indicate that the Big Eight collectively govern the accounting and auditing standard-setting process.  相似文献
