This research examines factors that influence the development of marketing cooperation among cluster-based firms in different
regions in the world. Theorists have consistently demonstrated the role and importance of economic externalities, such as
knowledge spillovers, within industrial clusters. Less research attention has been paid to the investigation of marketing-based
externalities, though it has been suggested that these may also accrue from geographical agglomeration. The study focus is
on the development of joint marketing activities between firms operating in a single industry sector, located in close proximity.
The results suggest that social networking is important in facilitating inter-firm cooperation in marketing activities. The
study also explores whether the levels of inter-firm cooperation differs between countries with distinctly different levels
of social collectivism. Interestingly, this study finds few significant differences in marketing cooperation among cluster-based

AbstractMany countries use tax-related whistleblowing programs, but the evidence on these programs suggests information provided by whistleblowers yields modest tax collections. However, when every citizen could become a whistleblower, deterrence from tax evasion can by itself increase tax collections. We find that tax collections significantly increased after the introduction of the whistleblowing mechanism in Israel in February 2013, although this mechanism directly yielded little or no tax collections. In support of the hypothesis that deterrence led to the increase in tax collections, we find that collections increased in industries with high tax-evasion risk, but not in industries with low tax-evasion risk. Furthermore, the increase in tax collections occurred in corporations, where the timing and magnitude of tax payments are more discretionary, but not from employees, for whom employers directly deduct taxes. Eventually, following reports that the whistleblowing mechanism is ineffective, deterrence diminished and tax collections decreased, suggesting the deterrence effect was temporary. 相似文献

We empirically investigate valuations of Internet firms at various stages of the initial public offering (IPO) from two perspectives. First, we examine the association between the valuation of Internet IPOs and a set of financial and nonfinancial variables, which prior anecdotal or empirical evidence suggests may serve as value drivers. Second, we document differences in IPO valuations between Internet and non-Internet firms as well as across different stages in the IPO process—i.e., initial prospectus price, final offer price, and first trading day price—within each set of firms. Our primary two conclusions are as follows. First, there are noticeable differences between valuations of Internet and non-Internet firms, especially at the prospectus and final IPO stage. Specifically, the valuation of non-Internet firms generally follows the conventional wisdom regarding valuation: positive earnings and cash flows are priced, while negative earnings and negative cash flows are not. The valuation of Internet firms, however, departs from conventional wisdom, with earnings not being priced, and negative cash flows being priced perhaps because they are viewed as investments. This difference between the two classes of firms may be expected, given the age and unique nature of the Internet industry. Second, there are significant differences between the initial valuation of firms at the prospectus and IPO stage and their valuation by the stock market at the end of the first trading day. For non-Internet firms, the difference is largely ascribed to the relative offering size. For Internet firms, however, the differences are with respect to positive cash flows, sales growth, R&D, and high-risk warnings, in addition to the relative offering size. 相似文献

This study further explores a structural break in the relation between stock returns of firms with foreign currency positions and lagged exchange rate changes (exchange rate exposure effect) documented in Bartov and Bodnar (1994). We examine whether changes in the financial accounting reporting of foreign currency positions from SFAS No. 52 might have improved investors' ability to characterize firms' economic exchange rate exposures, and thus the impact of exchange rate movements on firm value. Our findings indicate that only firms reporting using the dollar as the functional currency (i.e., those reporting as if they were still under SFAS No. 8) retain a significant relation between the lagged change in the dollar and firm value in the post-SFAS No. 52 period. For firms reporting using the foreign currency as the functional currency (i.e., those who switched to the new translation method) the significant lagged relation disappears. This is consistent with the use of a foreign currency as the functional currency under SFAS No. 52 facilitating valuation of U.S. firms with foreign operations. 相似文献

The study analyzes the effect of restrictive building codes on the price of housing, and the simultaneous impact of housing values on the strictness of codes. A model is defined and estimated, using data for more than 1100 localities. The results show that strict codes raised housing values, in 1970, by about one thousand dollars. They furthermore show that the strictness of codes is in turn affected by housing values, as well as by the strength of construction unions. Homeowners and construction unions are thus both observed to gain from restrictive building codes, which can explain the prevalence of such regulations. 相似文献

Dividends and open-market stock repurchases are by far the two most common mechanisms for distributing excess cash to shareholders. This article identifies and then tests three potentially important factors for the corporate choice between increasing cash dividends and initiating openmarket stock repurchases. More specifically, the authors argue that companies are more likely to distribute cash to investors through open-market repurchases than through dividend increases when (1) management believes its stock is undervalued, (2) management compensation packages include stock options, and (3) the company's stockholder base is dominated by institutional investors.
To test these three explanations, the authors use a matched-pair design in which each company announcing an open market repurchase program in a given year is matched with a comparable-size firm from the same industry that increased its cash dividends but did not initiate an open-market repurchase program. The paper focuses on farm-level nitrogen fertilization strategies of Dutch arable farmers for analyzing the substitution of
organic fertilizers (manure) with chemical fertilizers. The model developed investigates the impact of the major parameters
affecting the inferiority of manure compared with chemical fertilizers, including the low availability and non-uniformity
of the nitrogen in manure, and the low level and high non-uniformity of plant-available nitrogen supplied via manure. The
sensitivity of the optimal fertilization decisions and its associated environmental impact to product price, manure cost,
and environmental tax is also examined. The theoretical analysis is applied to a representative Dutch grower of ware potatoes
in the northern part of the Netherlands. The results suggest that in the absence of a subsidy the representative farmer will

Governmental policies tend to support and boost entrepreneurship in peripheral regions in many countries. This research revives the debate about specific regional policies designed to foster local new business creation, and the entrepreneurial framework conditions needed at the regional level for emerging regions such as Latin America. We applied one of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor’s methodologies, the National Experts Survey, to a sample of 695 key informants in Chile at eight regions of which six are classified as peripheral. Using non-parametric statistics we compared the differences between peripheral and core regions. The main results indicate that peripherally located entrepreneurship experts perceive their regions as in a worse position than centrally located experts in terms of finance access and physical infrastructure. On the other hand, the results indicate that peripheral entrepreneurship experts detect more market dynamism in their regions and surprisingly perceive general policy and government programs as supporting entrepreneurship although the Chilean government had not promoted many regional policies. 相似文献
