Reinventing the gastronomic identity of Croatian tourist destinations

A unique and memorable gastronomic identity is an indispensable asset to any successful tourist destination. In this respect Croatia's tourism falls seriously short. Based primarily on “international” cuisine, the gastronomic offer of Croatian tourist destinations is predictable and conventional. This paper calls for a new, exciting gastronomic identity of Croatian tourist destinations founded on Croatia's exceptionally rich gastronomic heritage. Apart from the food offer itself, crucial to the success of this new identity will be its commodification and spectacularisation through the discursive practice of gastrospeak. Learning to appreciate and use gastrospeak will be an important future task for Croatian tourist destination management.     

Using intervention analysis to assess catastrophic events on business environment

This article describes the use of Autoregressive Interactive Moving Average with impact assessment (intervention analysis) on a time series. In this case, a search was made for sudden changes in the business environment when a natural disaster struck a community. The catastrophic event was hurricane Hugo. Data were obtained from a public hospital. Admissions, outpatient visits, and emergency room visits were examined. All showed a significant increase in activity, not only for the period immediately following the event, but also for at least two years following the storm. Studies indicate that the long-term clean-up and reconstruction activities may have increased this public facility's case load in a manner somewhat different from other community hospitals.     

DOES INPUT QUALITY DRIVE MEASURED DIFFERENCES IN FIRM PRODUCTIVITY?*

One explanation for productivity dispersion is that the quality of inputs differs across firms. We add labor market history variables such as experience and firm and industry tenure, as well as general human capital measures such as schooling and sex. Adding these variables decreases the ratio of the 90th to 10th productivity quantiles from 3.27 to 2.68 across eight Danish manufacturing and service industries. We also use the wage bill and worker fixed effects. We find that the wage bill explains as much dispersion as human capital measures.

There have been calls for restrictions on the employment of skilled professionals in the UK who are trained in poor countries. Such policies would not be good economics. However, it is also immoral to restrain the freedom of movement of people on such grounds.     

Capacity reduction,quota trading and productivity: the case of a fishery*

We present the first ex post study that quantitatively analyses the effects of a licence buy‐back and enhanced quota trading on the profitability and productivity of individual vessels in a fishery. Using firm‐level data and a profit index decomposition method, we find that small and large vessels and three different trawler fleets all experienced substantial productivity gains in the year immediately following a licence buy‐back and the establishment of a quota brokerage service. The apparent ongoing benefits of the buy‐back and increased quota trading over the sample period are in stark contrast to the generally unfavourable long‐term outcomes commonly associated with vessel buy‐backs in input‐controlled fisheries.
