The objectives of this historical study were to investigate resources available to meet clothing needs of men and women in Columbus, Georgia, an important center of the southern textile industry, between 1850 and 1891. The resources examined were products of Columbus textile mills; retailers of clothing fabrics and ready-to-wear garments and goods sold by them; and establishments and/or individuals assembling custom-made clothing. Data sources were newspapers, city directories, and extant business records. A comparison of the number of newspaper advertisements for clothing fabrics and ready-to-wear garments in both Columbus and New York City was made to measure any relationship between a southern city and a major metropolis. Major findings were: (1) the assortment of textiles manufactured in Columbus expanded and included clothing fabrics marketed there; (2) a narrower assortment of fabrics was advertised in Columbus than in New York City, but fine fabrics were available in Columbus (The measured relationship between the two cities in terms of clothing fabrics and ready-to-wear was minimal; only a few types of ready-to- wear garments advertised in New York City were never advertised in Columbus.); (3) fabrics and/or ready-to-wear were sold in general stores, and in dry goods, merchant tailors and men's clothing specialty stores; (4) the number of sources of custom-made clothing increased for women, but remained almost constant for men.  相似文献

Several literatures bearing on the democratic firm are reviewed, examining democratic governance, participative management, new forms of ownership and how these affect firm performance. ABSTRACT Professor Martin Bronfenbrenner's mark on the economics profession was significant and worth remembering. He touched the lives of many as a father, cousin, teacher, scholar, expert referee, colleague, and judge of important contemporary debates. Of special interest is his unique personality. He was a specialist in self-effacement, peppered with liberal shakes of cynicism and sarcasm. Despite all this, he managed to win the respect and hearts of individuals on several continents and across several generations. This paper investigates the price and volatility relationship in European short-term interest rate markets. Cointegration analysis is used to analyse the long and short run relationship and a GARCH BEKK model is estimated to analyse the volatility transmission between the markets. The stability of the long run relationship is also examined using Bai and Perron (Econometrica 66(1),47–78, 1998, J Appl Econ 18(1):1–22, 2003) structural break methodology. The results show that the relationship between the EURIBOR spot deposit rate and the EURIBOR future contract has changed significantly since 2001 and several structural breaks are present in the 13 year sample period. During periods where there is a long run relationship present the spot deposit rate generally leads the future rate in price discovery. In the short run there is bi-directional causality present between the markets. There is also significant evidence of volatility transmission from the spot market to the futures market throughout the sample period.  相似文献

Using a high-frequency data set of the spot Australian/US dollar, this study examines the distribution of quotes, spreads, and returns across the trading day. By identifying the direction of trade and the subsequent quote returns from contributing banks, the segmented nature of the market into market-makers and informed and uninformed traders is investigated. The results suggest that the economic gain possible from private information is maximised over 2 to 5 quotes and is rapidly eroded by 20 quotes (about 2 min later during busy trading times) as other new information enters the market. Also, the analysis is revealing of discontinuities in trading and the volatility of pricing across the trading day.  相似文献

It is organized around two guiding questions; how and why major U.K. supermarkets have taken control and dominance of the food market, and the role of information technology and accounting information in replacing market relationships.
