The previous literature provides a highly ambiguous picture on the impact of trade and investment agreements on FDI. Most empirical studies ignore the actual content of BITs and RTAs, treating them as “black boxes”, despite the diversity of investment provisions constituting the essence of these agreements. We overcome this serious limitation by analyzing the impact of modalities on the admission of FDI and dispute settlement mechanisms in both RTAs and BITs on bilateral FDI flows between 1978 and 2004. We find that FDI reacts positively to RTAs only if they offer liberal admission rules. Dispute settlement provisions play a minor role. While RTAs without strong investment provisions may even discourage FDI, the reactions to BITs are less discriminate with foreign investors responding favourably to the mere existence of BITs. 相似文献

Research on the effects of personalized messages on consumers’ behavioral responses has yielded mixed findings. We explore
how e-mail personalization influences click-through intentions. Our results suggest that consumers experience personalization
reactance in response to highly personalized messages when the fit between the offer in the message and consumers’ personal
characteristics is not explicitly justified by firms. Consequently, consumers are less willing to respond favorably to the
offer. Results of two studies suggest that this effect primarily emerges for consumers who perceive the utility of the service
to be relatively low. For those consumers with higher perceived utility, justification of personalization is less important

Conventional scale and scope economies are inadequate to determine the competitive viability of banks that vary in scale and product mix simultaneously. This paper develops two new and more general measures of multi-product economies. Slight diseconomies of scale and product mix are found for banks, usually on the order of 1 to 3 percent, which may be due to demand-side influences. These are robust to differing cost and output specifications, organizational levels, and competitive environments. The ecological and societal problems caused by product obsolescence and consumerism in modern economies constitute a “wicked human‐made problem” of significant magnitude. Current (old) ways of thinking cannot address these problems. Accordingly, in this paper, we critically explore the novel idea of integrated personhood and worldviews to theorize research on self‐repairers and their repair behaviours to extend product lifetimes. We conducted a structured and systematic review of published work (n = 183) to identify the conceptual content of the field to inform our theorization. Our findings highlight three key issues. First, constricted theorization undermines understanding of self‐repairers and their product lifetime extension (and spillover) behaviours. Second, the underlying conceptual complexity is typically underestimated. Third, the dominance of voluntarist and deterministic studies impedes new directions in research. From our review, an integrated worldview–personhood framework emerges that can deepen understanding of avant‐garde self‐repairers’ engagement with product lifetimes. 相似文献

This paper tests the idea that financial regulation can impact performance persistence in the context of the hedge fund industry in 48 countries over the years 1994–2008. The data show evidence of three types of regulation influencing performance persistence: (1) minimum capital restrictions, which restrict lower quality funds and hence increase the likelihood of performance persistence, (2) restrictions on location of key service providers, which restrict human capital choices and hence tend to mitigate performance persistence, and (3) distribution channels, which make fund performance more opaque, decrease the likelihood of performance persistence. We do not find evidence that distribution channels, that promote fund presence to institutional investors, enhance performance persistence. The world is full of signs (symbols, signifiers). They guide us in supermarkets, on highways and in airports. They even guide
us to the right bathroom. Signs have a huge impact if they are used as logos or in advertisements. Signs also help us when
we read manuals or when we use a remote control. Signs are used everywhere. Signs render service as they are “applications
of skills and knowledge for the benefit of another party” (Vargo and Lusch 2004, 2008). Like all offerings signs only render
service if they are used in some way. This article will argue that the usage of signs depends on the practices they are embedded in. It is argued
that signs do not gain their full meaning and do not serve or create any value unless they are embedded in practices. Since
signs are explicit and practices mainly implicit they are both necessary to serve and more importantly to (co-)create value.
Signs and practices are two sides of the same coin so both they (and their interrelation) have to be understood in order to
