Linkages between the regulated and unregulated dairy markets in Kenya were examined using an econometric model of the fluid milk intake for eight processing plants. Counter-intuitive results were obtained: an increase in the regulated price was significant in decreasing intake in the regulated market, indicating that a price increase in the regulated market also increased price and quantity supplied in the unregulated market. Lagged rainfall was a proxy for available feed and was highly significant in explaining milk intake in the regulated market.  相似文献

Political processes may bring about Pareto improvements by increasing income inequality in a society that produces a public good by voluntary contributions. Proportional taxation funds a “governing agent.” The most endowed agent is the Condorcet winner for governing agent. When the tax rate can also be chosen by a vote, the ideal point of the agent with median initial endowment is the Condorcet winner under Cobb–Douglas utility. If Pareto improvements are possible, this ideal point corresponds to Pareto improvement. Pareto improvement may also be possible, even when a Leviathan set taxes, if there is deadweight loss from taxation. Pareto improvements are indeed always possible in “large” societies. On the other hand, no improvements may be possible if the initial distribution of wealth is very unequal in a “small” society, and Condorcet winners may not exist for other utility functions.  相似文献

Abstract: Zambia is a potential model adjuster: a country rich in natural resources and which has in recent years made strenuous efforts to reverse the interventionist policies of the past. This paper compares Zambia's adjustment experience with the claims made in the World Bank report Adjustment in Africa. It is shown that the largely rosy picture given in that report is not to be seen in the Zambian case. Résumé: La Zambie est un modèle potentiel en matière d'ajustement. Riche en ressources naturelles, ce pays s'est résolument efforcée, ces derniéres années, d'inverser les politiques interventionnistes du passé. L'auteur évalue l'expérience zambienne de la ajustement au regard des opinions formulées dans le rapport de la Banque mondiale intituléL'ajustement en Afrique. This paper briefly reviews previous research on strategic groups and concludes that the concept needs further refinement. In particular, strategic grouping studies have typically ignored the influence of time on competitive strategy and have assumed homogeneity in strategic behavior over the time period researched. Therefore, a general analytical method is proposed in order to identify time periods of similarity in strategic behavior—so-called stable strategic time periods. It is argued that following the identification of stable strategic time periods meaningful strategic groupings of companies within industries can be derived and further analysis of the dynamics of strategic group shifts can be performed.  相似文献

Leathers (1991) shows that while the existence of allocable fixed inputs can cause joint production (as in Shumway, Pope and Nash, 1984), it will not necessarily lead to joint production. The extent to which allocable fixed inputs cause joint production in agriculture is an empirical question. This paper offers an empirical answer. By estimating a short-run joint cost function, it is possible to identify levels of outputs for which joint production may be optimal in the short run but not in the long run. Only in these output regions will there be jointness caused by allocable fixed inputs. For the data in this paper (160 Wisconsin farms), these output regions are very small; thus allocable fixed inputs do not appear to be an important cause of jointness for these farms. Technical causes of jointness appear to be a significant cause of joint production.  相似文献

A large sample (N=692) of undergraduate business majors were surveyed in order to assess their attitudes toward 54 different employer activities that might impact on employee rights in the workplace. Demographic and lifestyle measures as well as one personality variable, authoritarianism, were also included in the survey. A factor analysis on attitudes toward employer activities revealed three distinct factors, which we labeled private, polydrug (i.e., polygraphs and drug tests), and normative activities. Mean levels of agreement with employer actions were highest for normative and lowest for private activities, with polydrug activities falling in between. All mean differences were highly significant. Authoritarianism proved to be the strongest predictor of attitudes toward both private and polydrug activities.  相似文献

The thinking styles of selected Canadian farm managers are identified using the life styles inventory (LSI). The farmers'LSI scores are compared with those of a base sample of nonfarmers, and correlations between the farmers'LSI scores and financial indicators are examined. Results indicate that farmers do thinking differently than nonfarmers and that there are significant correlations between thinking styles and financial measures.  相似文献
