In this paper, we examine some popular 'choice modelling' approaches to environmental valuation, which can be considered as alternatives to more familiar valuation techniques based on stated preferences such as the contingent valuation method. A number of choice modelling methods are consistent with consumer theory, and its focus on an attribute‐based theory of value permits a superior representation of many environmental management contexts. However, choice modelling surveys can place a severe cognitive burden upon respondents and induce satisficing rather than maximising behavioural patterns. In this framework, we seek to identify the best available choice modelling alternative and investigate its potential to 'solve' some of the major biases associated with standard contingent valuation. We then discuss its use in the light of policy appraisal needs within the EU. An application to the demand for rock climbing in Scotland is provided as an illustration. 相似文献

Within the framework of the proportional hazard model proposed in Cox (1972), Han and Hausman (1990) consider the logarithm of the integrated baseline hazard function as constant in each time period. We, however, proposed an alternative semiparametric estimator of the parameters of the covariate part. The estimator is considered as semiparametric since no prespecified functional form for the error terms (or certain convolution) is needed. This estimator, proposed in Lewbel (2000) in another context, shows at least four advantages. The distribution of the latent variable error is unknown and may be related to the regressors. It takes into account censored observations, it allows for heterogeneity of unknown form and it is quite easy to implement since the estimator does not require numerical searches. Using the Spanish Labour Force Survey, we compare empirically the results of estimating several alternative models, basically on the estimator proposed in Han and Hausman (1990) and our semiparametric estimator. 相似文献

In contrast to a posterior analysis given a particular sampling model, posterior model probabilities in the context of model uncertainty are typically rather sensitive to the specification of the prior. In particular, ‘diffuse’ priors on model-specific parameters can lead to quite unexpected consequences. Here we focus on the practically relevant situation where we need to entertain a (large) number of sampling models and we have (or wish to use) little or no subjective prior information. We aim at providing an ‘automatic’ or ‘benchmark’ prior structure that can be used in such cases. We focus on the normal linear regression model with uncertainty in the choice of regressors. We propose a partly non-informative prior structure related to a natural conjugate g-prior specification, where the amount of subjective information requested from the user is limited to the choice of a single scalar hyperparameter g0j. The consequences of different choices for g0j are examined. We investigate theoretical properties, such as consistency of the implied Bayesian procedure. Links with classical information criteria are provided. More importantly, we examine the finite sample implications of several choices of g0j in a simulation study. The use of the MC3 algorithm of Madigan and York (Int. Stat. Rev. 63 (1995) 215), combined with efficient coding in Fortran, makes it feasible to conduct large simulations. In addition to posterior criteria, we shall also compare the predictive performance of different priors. A classic example concerning the economics of crime will also be provided and contrasted with results in the literature. The main findings of the paper will lead us to propose a ‘benchmark’ prior specification in a linear regression context with model uncertainty. 相似文献

The Russian Economy has evolved into a hybrid form, a partially monetized quasi-market system that has been called the virtual economy. In the virtual economy, barter and non-monetary transactions play a key role in transferring value from productive activities
to the loss-making sectors of the economy. We show how this transfer takes place, and how it can be consistent with the incentives
of economic agents. We analyze a simple partial-equilibrium model of the virtual economy, and show how it might prove an obstacle

In this paper we introduce a family of test statistics for testing symmetry based on φ-divergence families. These test statistics
yield the likelihood ratio test and the Pearson test statistic as special cases. Asymptotic distribution for the new test
statistics are derived under both the null and the alternative hypotheses. A simulation study is presented to see that some
new test statistics offer an attractive alternative to the classical Pearson test statistic for the problem of symmetry.

Given an increased emphasis on work teams in organizations, it is important to select applicants based on their ability to make contributions to a given work team. This paper proposes that person–group fit should be useful to select applicants for work teams and suggests that effective use of person–group fit will create both more cohesive work units and more effectively functioning work units. It proposes ways to make valid and reliable assessments of person–group fit that could be used to minimize bias in the selection process. This paper develops a nonlinear, mathematical programming model for estimating production decisions in an open access, regional power market. Our approach allows one to estimate competitive power market equilibrium prices, which in turn offers empirical conclusions about marginal generation facilities, transmission interconnection congestion, and most importantly, load pockets and market power. Sensitivity analyses are conducted by subjecting the model to changes in production costs, peak hour demand, power imports, and transmission interconnection price assumptions. We then consider the issue of a firm's ability to exercise market power and the implications it may have on regional equilibrium power prices. In this paper, an empirically stable money demand model for M3 in the euro area is constructed. Starting with a multivariate system, three cointegrating relationships with economic content are found: (i) the spread between the long‐term and the short‐term nominal interest rates, (ii) the long‐term real interest rate, and (iii) a long‐run demand for broad money M3. There is evidence that the determinants of M3 money demand are weakly exogenous with respect to the long‐run parameters. Hence, following a general‐to‐specific modelling approach, a parsimonious conditional error‐correction model for M3 money demand is derived which can be interpreted economically. This research examines the effect of an alliance competence on resource-based alliance success. The fundamental thesis guiding
this research is that an alliance competence contributes to alliance success, both directly and through the acquisition and
creation of resources. Using survey data gathered from 145 alliances, empirical tests of the hypotheses provide support for
the posited explanation of alliance success. The findings indicate that an alliance competence is not only antecedent to the
resources that are necessary for alliance success but also to alliance success itself.
C. Jay Lambe (Ph.D., The Darden School at University of Virginia) is an assistant professor of marketing in the Pamplin College of Business
at Virginia Tech. For 10 years prior to entering academe, he was engaged in business-to-business marketing for both Xerox

Robert E. Spekman is the Tayloe Murphy Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School at the University of Virginia. He was formerly
a professor of marketing and associate director of the Center for Telecommunications at the University of Southern California.
He is an internationally recognized authority on business-to-business marketing and strategic alliances. His consulting experiences
range from marketing research and competitive analysis, to strategic market planning, supply chain management, channels of
distribution design and implementation, and strategic partnering. He has taught in a number of executive programs in the United
States, Canada, Latin America, Asia, and Europe. His executive program experience ranges from general marketing strategy,
to sales force management, to channels strategy, to creating strategic alliances, to business-to-business marketing strategy,
to a number of single-company and senior executive management programs. He has edited and/or written seven books and has authored
(coauthored) more than 80 articles and papers. He also serves as a reviewer for a number of marketing and management journals,
as well as for the National Science Foundation. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Southern California, he
taught in the College of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park. During his tenure at Maryland, he was granted
the Most Distinguished Faculty Award by the MBA students on three separate occasions.
Shelby D. Hunt is the J. B. Hoskins and P. W. Horn Professor of Marketing at Texas Tech University, Lubbock. A past editor of theJournal of Marketing (1985–87), he is the author ofModern Marketing Theory: Critical Issues in the Philosophy of Marketing Science (South-Western, 1991) andA General Theory of Competition: Resources, Competences, Productivity, Economic Growth (Sage, 2000). He has written numerous articles on competitive theory, macromarketing, ethics, channels of distribution, philosophy
of science, and marketing theory. Three of hisJournal of Marketing articles—“The Nature and Scope of Marketing” (1976), “General Theories and Fundamental Explananda of Marketing” (1983), and
“The Comparative Advantage Theory of Competition” (1995) (with Robert M. Morgan)—won the Harold H. Maynard Award for the best
article on marketing theory. His 1985Journal of Business Research article with Lawrence B. Chonko, “Ethics and Marketing Management,” received the 2000 Elsevier Science Exceptional Quality
and High Scholarly Impact award. His 1989 article, ”Reification and Realism in Marketing: in Defense of Reason,” won theJournal of Macromarketing Charles C. Slater Award. For his contributions to theory and science in marketing, he received the 1986 Paul D. Converse
Award from the American Marketing Association, the 1987 Outstanding Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing
