Hiring MBA's represents an investment at a significant risk level, and data on the firm's historical experience with MBA investments should be maintained and evaluated. The characteristics of the MBA which count toward performance should be discovered. The authors suggest several: maturity measures, quantitative orientation, educational specialty, attitude toward work.     

Population policy aspects of the employment of foreigners

The author considers the medium-range and long-term effects of declining fertility in the Federal Republic of Germany, including the consequences for the population, age structure, economy, and social security system. The slight rise in the number of births is attributed to the presence of foreigners, and it is suggested that only a rapid resumption of immigration will assure demographic stability (SUMMARY IN ENG)     

Clinic visit and waiting: patient education and satisfaction

Teaching should be part of every patient's health care. Even though this study did not show that teaching improves patient satisfaction with the clinic visit, it did indicate that subjects who were taught by the nurse were more satisfied with the education received during that visit.$     

Alcohol abuse and liver enzymes (AALE): results of an intercompany study of mortality

Evaluation of applicants for life insurance who have elevations of their liver function tests or an increased probability of alcohol abuse has always been difficult for underwriters. This paper reports the results of an intercompany study in which the pooled mortality experience of a group of insureds with evidence of alcohol abuse, an adverse driving record or elevations of the liver transaminases or gamma-glutamyl transferase is summarized.     

Conditional Cash Transfers, Schooling, and Child Labor: Micro-Simulating Brazil's Bolsa Escola Program

A growing number of developing economies are providing cashtransfers to poor people that require certain behaviors on theirpart, such as attending school or regularly visiting healthcare facilities. A simple ex ante methodology is proposed forevaluating such programs and used to assess the Bolsa Escolaprogram in Brazil. The results suggest that about 60 percentof poor 10- to 15-year-olds not in school enroll in responseto the program. The program reduces the incidence of povertyby only a little more than one percentage point, however, andthe Gini coefficient falls just half a point. Results are betterfor measures more sensitive to the bottom of the distribution,but the effect is never large.     

Targeting Child Labor in Debt Bondage: Evidence, Theory, and Policy Implications

Despite recent multilateral efforts to single out child laborin debt bondage as one of the worst forms of child labor, severalimportant questions have yet to be addressed: How pervasiveis the phenomenon? Are there systematic correlations betweenthe incidence of children in debt bondage and the economic,legislative, and financial development indicators of the economy?How does an understanding of these correlates affect the waynational and international policy measures aimed at targetingthis form of child labor are perceived? This article addresseseach of these questions. The empirical findings suggest strongcorrelation between the likelihood of the incidence of childlabor in debt bondage with the stage of development of an economy,the stage of financial development, and enforcement of corelabor rights. Building on this evidence, the article presentsa theoretical model that highlights the drawbacks and meritsof a number of policies aimed at putting checks on child laborin debt bondage.     

A Bayesian-like estimator of the process capability index Cpmk

Pearn et al. (1992) proposed the capability index C_pmk, and investigated the statistical properties of its natural estimator for stable normal processes with constant mean μ. Chen and Hsu (1995) showed that under general conditions the asymptotic distribution of is normal if μ≠m, and is a linear combination of the normal and the folded-normal distributions if μ=m, where m is the mid-point between the upper and the lower specification limits. In this paper, we consider a new estimator for stable processes under a different (more realistic) condition on process mean, namely, P (μ≥m)=p, 0≤p≤1. We obtain the exact distribution, the expected value, and the variance of under normality assumption. We show that for P (μ≥m)=0, or 1, the new estimator is the MLE of C_pmk, which is asymptotically efficient. In addition, we show that under general conditions is consistent and is asymptotically unbiased. We also show that the asymptotic distribution of is a mixture of two normal distributions.
