Recent research indicates that there may be a relationship between the characteristics of the audit engagement partner and audit quality. In this paper, we examine the relationship between audit quality and the presence of a female or male audit engagement partner. We use the likelihood that an auditor issues a going-concern opinion (GCO), conditional on the client's financial situation, as an indicator of audit quality. Using a sample of 7105 financially distressed, private Belgian companies, we find that female auditors are, ceteris paribus, more likely to issue GCOs than male auditors. Our results also show that this effect is stronger when clients are either important (i.e. represent a material portion of the auditor's revenues) or high-risk (i.e. associated with increased uncertainties and risks). Collectively, these results indicate higher audit quality by female auditors. 相似文献

This study aims to review what we do (and do not) know about technology entrepreneurship (TE) research to date. Based on a categorized bibliometric analysis resulting from a systematic review of 135 scientific articles published in refereed journals over the past 27 years (1986–2013), we identify the core domains of TE, its intellectual structure, the scientific journals with a major impact in this field of research, and the affiliation and collaboration networks within it. Specifically, through a detailed analysis of article co-citations within the TE area, this study provides co-citation networks of authors, journals, and their respective clusters, revealing their rankings in terms of contributions to the TE literature. This comprehensive analysis can be used to enhance our understanding of TE and support further research in this field. 相似文献

We study the effect of quadratic differentiation costs in the Hotelling model of endogenous product differentiation. The equilibrium
location choices are found to depend on the magnitude of the differentiation costs (relatively to the transportation costs
supported by consumers). When the differentiation costs are low, there is maximum differentiation. When they are high, there
is partial differentiation, with a degree of differentiation that decreases with the differentiation costs. In any case, the
socially optimal degree of differentiation is always lower than the equilibrium level. We also study the case of collusion
between firms. If firms can combine locations but not prices, they locate asymmetrically when differentiation costs are high

Using a panel of 13 advanced economies for the period 1980–2012, we find that periods of impaired financial intermediation mainly accrue to maturity mismatches in sovereign debt. Thus, a higher (lower) share of short-term (medium and long-term) debt leads to an increase in the financial stress index. From a policy perspective, our work suggests that debt management policies translated into longer average maturities of sovereign debt not only reduce the expected debt servicing cost, but also mitigate strains in the financial sector. 相似文献

This paper applies nonparametric decision tree models to the analysis of financial leverage decisions. This approach presents three appealing features: (i) the relationship between leverage and explanatory variables is not predetermined but is derived from information provided by the data, (ii) the models respect the fractional nature of leverage ratios, and (iii) each covariate is allowed to influence in different ways the financial leverage decisions of firms automatically assigned to different groups. Based on a data set of Portuguese firms, decision trees are used to tackle both classification (the decision to issue debt) and regression (the decision on the amount of debt to be issued, conditional on using debt) problems. It is found that: (i) two‐part models are the most appropriate specification for explaining the overall amount of debt used by firms, (ii) there are no drastic differences between the results produced by tree and parametric models, although some divergences may arise, and (iii) tree models suggest relationships between covariates and leverage that parametric models fail to capture, especially when the sample size is small. 相似文献

In the supply chain oriented to Industrial 4.0 Scenario the scarcity of studies on Technology Transfer (TT) can be easily observed. TT is a fundamental process, because it steers the absorption and dissemination of technologies towards the various stages of supply chain. The objective of this study is to contextualise TT in the supply chain of Industrial 4.0 Scenario, focusing on the supply, manufacturing industry and final consumer stages. A review of the literature was carried out, using a structured protocol and criteria to compose the bibliographic portfolio. To support the questions presented in this study, the most relevant articles related to the researched topic were thoroughly analyzed. The results infers that in the Industrial 4.0 Scenario, the supply chain will go through changes, such as real-time visibility throughout the entirety of the supply chain, continuous collaboration between the stages of the chain, among other significant changes. 相似文献

In this paper we consider several alternative approaches to analyze gender wage discrimination. Besides the traditional OLS estimator, we use two other approaches to control for sample selection bias problems: the parametric procedure suggested by Vella and Wooldridge, and the Li and Wooldridge semi‐parametric estimator. We study the case of Portugal, employing data from the European Community Household Panel. The results reveal that the discrimination estimates are sensitive to the different econometric approaches. While the current use of some mind-altering substances alleviates current level of depression, it facilitates future depression.
Our analysis incorporates this intertemporal tradeoff and shows that the stationary status of a consistently overly ambitious
sophisticated user is improved by impatience, and that this improvement is amplified by the ratio of the instantaneous depression-relief
effect to the status-degradation effect of the mind-altering substance. The analysis also shows that the existence of a supportive
personal community leads to permanent cyclical use of mind-altering substances.

Positional behaviour is arguably a source of social externalities. Remedies for this market failure are defended by some authors and rejected by others. One of the issues discussed is the role that the competition for positional goods may have in generating technological innovation. This article aims to contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of this process through the use of an agent-based model. Simulations show a plausible dynamics of the process of technological innovation as generated by consumption of positional nature. An interpretation of the results in the scope of the policy discussion in question is provided. The influence of key factors such as income inequality, the materialization of the Hirsch conjecture, and characteristics of the network of relative preferences, is analised. We also frame the potential interest of positional consumption and this model in particular in the context of the ongoing discussion among evolutionary economists on the behaviour of demand. 相似文献

We examine if a gender gap persists in executive compensation and if the composition and the determinants of executive compensation
for men versus women are the same for the S&P1500 listed firms during the period from 1992 to 2004. This analysis is also
extended to high tech firms, where high scholarship is required both for male and female executives. The results reveal that
the gender gap in executive compensation is reducing essentially after the year 2000. Also, the factors that explain the variation
in executive compensation are not all the same for men and women. However, firms continue to pay women, who are considered
more risk averse than men, a similar proportion of risky compensation components, such as stock options and restricted stocks,
than they pay to men. In terms of technology firms, we find that the gender differences in total compensation are not statistically
significant. Our study offers insight into recent data for executive compensation. The finding that the gender gap diminishes
is a sign of a better functioning market for executives. Our findings could be potentially useful for compensation committees
in order to develop compensation packages that take into consideration the degree of risk aversion in order to enhance performance.
Compensation adjusted for risk aversion can produce a higher level of satisfaction for the employees and can lead to better
performances. Future research should focus on international comparison of various dimensions of executive compensation. 相似文献
