美国FSG出版公司（Farrar,Straus and Giroux Publisher）2005年出版了《世界是平的——21世纪简史》一书,作者托马斯·L·弗里德曼是《纽约时报》国际事务专栏作家。他认为,人类经历了三次全球化浪潮,当今世界已经变得“平坦”,阻碍各国间交流的障碍已基本消失。现摘介如下：

美国新英格兰州的一家超级市场,采用做广告和送减价赠券的方式扩大销售,但这只吸引了它自己原有的一批顾客,因为它的竞争对手也至少了同等的推销费用。为此,它开始进行一种新的尝试:凡光顾该店的新顾客,如能购买价值8美元的食品杂货,就可得到4张礼券;当这些顾客再次光临时,还可得到一张优待的支票兑现卡。

Improving the delivery of clinic care

There has been an increasingly widespread movement toward the delivery of health care in outpatient settings. Hospitals must start to prepare for the shift from inpatient to outpatient services. Reductions in reimbursement and increasing costs will force hospitals to collect and obtain more data on outpatient services. Projecting future demands and assessing current utilization rates are two of the key factors in maintaining stability. This article is a case study of a major urban medical center's outpatient clinic. It includes a summary of observations on the clinic's daily operations and several recommendations for improvement. While the original analysis was highly specific to the actual facility observed, this article has been structured so that it may be applied to other institutions.     

Politics as an environmental factor in population development: reviewing the South African situation

The political factors that affect the development of a successful population policy in South Africa are examined. "It is concluded that despite the important role of socioeconomic development, the success of the population development programme ultimately depends upon (a) the actual distribution of political power to all communities; (b) the degree of legitimacy enjoyed by the government among the broader population; and (c) a general political consensus regarding the urgency for curbing the population growth rate."
