Design of a curriculum for destination studies

Since vocational tourism courses started at Sydney Technical College in 1973, there have been problems in teaching about tourist destinations. Historical analysis of the subject's development indicates that problems stem largely from an absence of tourism theory. Throughout this subject's development, there have been four major influences: the vocational needs of tourism students; the definition of tourism systems; the adoption of a primary orientation towards the study of the causes of tourism; and developmental work on the nature of tourist attractions. The current curriculum is described and it is suggested that due to these influences it overcomes many former problems with its integrated inter-disciplinary approach employing tourism theory as the core discipline.     

SIMULATION OF PORTFOLIO RETURNS: VARYING NUMBERS OF SECURITIES AND HOLDING PERIODS

Variability may be measured around the long-run market return by combining the well-developed area of security diversification with the notion of time diversification. This non-traditional concept of diversifiable risk is illustrated with results of a very large scale simulation. The results are very general since the data used in the simulation consist of all firms on the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) monthly return file from January 1926 through December 1977.     

A MODEL OF JOB CHOICE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT*

The paper presents a model of choice between alternative available jobs in which each job has an uncertain multi-period income prospect. Imperfectly informed expectations as well as job preferences and attitudes to risk determine the choice. The model is used to locate and discuss some problems of designing government programs which are intended to increase job mobility. The main conclusion is that government interventions may impose costs on the economy which are greater than the benefits because the information needed to assess costs and benefits is not generally available and political pressures may distort the expenditures.     

SOME CURRENT POLICY ISSUES*

A number of current policy issues are discussed which illustrate serious confusion and economic illiteracy in the minds of many influential farm leaders. The issues discussed are: the cost-price squeeze in agriculture; the embargo on the export of merino rams; promotion of farm products; land policy; and tax concessions for agriculture. In some cases policies are followed which run counter to both farmer and national interests. Along with farm management extension, there is a growing need for agricultural policy extension.
